Yes, that's a point I had not considered. A friend has cockpit cushions
which I believe are closed cell foam and I have found them to be rather
firm.

One reason is that closed cell foam is very hard to find in anything other
than firm or extra firm which may not be appropriate for some cushions.
OTOH, the fast draining open cell stuff may not be the best choice if you
are covering it in a water resistant fabric like Sunbrella.

will you get water into open cell foam but over time you will get dirt
into there as well and this is prime territory for odour producing fungi
and bacteria. Maybe you can wash out the dirt and use a dilute bleach
solution to partially disinfect the foam but closed cell foam would avoid
all of this.
