I'd do the same with ties as they'd be less likely to slip down after the rode was stretched thin in a squall. Remember, when the rode stretches, it gets thinner. The ties are (relatively) inelastic. I use the plastic tape markers as well. I don't think I'd care to put a tie through the center of the rode though. Seems as if there'd be a lot of chafe as the rode stretches and relaxes.
