Any comments on these boats, good bad or ugly? G -- Ask not for whom the terrorist bell tolls; it tolls for thee, and thee, and thee--for decent, innocent people everywhere. |

We had an Aquarius 23 for a couple ofl years. We cruised it on the columbia river, South Puget sound, San-Jauns and desolation sound( 25 day's) Family of four. The boat did not sail very well with much heel. Keep it flat and it sailed great. Our boat had the compresion post at the under the mast which was something I ws told to look for. I added a cabinet on the port side by the galley. Easy boat to rig my wife and I even rigged it a few times in the dark using only flash lights. We out grew the boat and my wife (6') wanted some head room. So to keep her happy I bought her a boat with some head room a santana 28 then a cascade42. Tim |

1971 Aquarius 23 swingkeel
I had an Aquarius 21 for a while. It was fun, easy to launch, rig and sail.
I did not feel that it was a "good performer" but it was ok for the money. There was a lot of space in the cabin and it was a good boat for weekend trips. I also liked the woodwork in mine. In retrospect I can see that it had some weak points, especially compared to a similar boat like a Catalina 22. The Aquarius 21 was built without a bilge, so any water that dripped in or was tracked in pooled on the cabin sole. I don't know if the 23 has the same fault. The swing keep was poorly mounted and banged from side to side in the trunk when at anchor, not a problem underway. The rig was a bit undersized and the boat didn't sail well in light air. Also, on the 21, the cockpit sole (floor) was near the waterline and water would flood back up the drains if there were more than two people sitting aft. So my opinion is that are a good value, maybe on par with a small McGregor, but not very high on quality. Regards Jason "Gordon" wrote in message ... Any comments on these boats, good bad or ugly? It is not heavily built and I would never take it off-shore. But it is built better than a lot of small sailboats. I thought the boat sailed well, considering its wide beam. I often beat Catalina 22s and MacGreggor 26es. It has a fractional rig and the headsail is roller-reefed; something way ahead of its time. It is easy to rig and launch from a trailer. The Aquarius 23 was the boat that convinced my wife it will be fun to live on a boat and sail around the world. We bought a 45' cutter and plan to sail away next summer. (grin) |
