Default Chesapeake Marinas, Restaurants that Actually Answer VHF

Most do, but you have to know what channel they listen to. Few monitor
16.

Is anyone maintaining a database of marinas, gas docks, restaurants, et
cetera, in the Chesapeake Bay area that ACTUALLY monitor their VHF radios
and respond to callers?

I don't expect 24-7 coverage, or anything like the reliability of someone
at a retail business answering the telephone, but it would be nice to know
which places actually do respond to VHF.

Thanks.

Really? I've always called on 16 and then switched to a working
channel.

Unless I am pretty close to the place, I mostly call on the phone
anyway. Some marinas don't even answer the phone.

A minor annoyance, but it is an annoyance. Maybe I should publish a list
of "Marinas that Don't Answer"?

Most of the marinas that don't answer don't have much transient
traffic. After awhile you get to know which ones those are. Also,
they are more likely to answer during the weekend in the summer than
off hours. I called our own marina on a Wednesday in July, both on
the phone and on the radio and never got an answer until I phoned the
shop. But usually they will answer the radio.

The marina at Selby Bay for instance doesn't answer either the phone
or the radio most of the time. They have a fuel dock and pump out,
but it is mostly for local traffic. Windmill Point often won't
answer the radio and neither will the marina on the Severn River off
Mobjack Bay or the marina in Reedville (especially on Monday when the
restaurant is closed). Tangier Island you usually have to just yell
to someone on shore when you get close enough for that, although you
can talk to them on the phone.

Most of the marinas in Baltimore harbor will answer the radio. Also
the marinas in Oxford, Deltaville, Crisfield, Solomons, in the
Yeocomico, and Coles Point.

I'm not sure about Chestertown, or Gratitude. I've never tried to
contact marinas in St. Michaels or Annapolis.

A lot of the YCs (and marinas, for all I know) monitor 68 and use 9
for yellling at the RC boat.

Ch. 9 I understand, but 68 as a "water taxi/berth availability"
channel eludes me.

The major yacht clubs here monitor 68 or 69. Usually it is for the club
boat to transport sailors from moorings to the dock....or for visiting
boats requesting dock/mooring space.

I've only tried to raise the Crab Claw restaurant in St. Micheals, and
the little harbor ferry. The ferry listens to channel 71, and the
barkeep has a portable VHF with which he calls the ferry for customers
who want to return to their boats. I called the restaurant once on 71 to
find out if there was a bit of dock space...they actually take
reservations.

We have a Chinese restaurant on Bedford Basin that used to monitor VHF.
They also have a nice little dock...and yes, the food is good.

Did he have call letters....(c; EVERY shore station is supposed to have a
SHORE STATION LICENSE...

I asked a boat dealer at a local boat show what his call letters were,
seeing as he was using it for his personal business band from the boat show
to the office, his trucks, etc. It wouldn't have said more than what he
was doing was illegal, until he told me to kiss off that he was a boat
dealer and some kind of immune from FCC rules/regs. Having ****ed me off,
I called FCC and they explained his problem to him. I guess I won't be
buying a boat from him....pity...(c;

I know this, but I don't know why 68 and sometimes 69 have evolved to
be "yacht club O.O.D/mooring" frequencies. I don't believe it's
"official", as are channels 9, 12, 13 and 16.
