A minor annoyance, but it is an annoyance. Maybe I should publish a
list of "Marinas that Don't Answer"?


Most of the marinas that don't answer don't have much transient
traffic. After awhile you get to know which ones those are. Also,
they are more likely to answer during the weekend in the summer than
off hours. I called our own marina on a Wednesday in July, both on
the phone and on the radio and never got an answer until I phoned the
shop. But usually they will answer the radio.
The marina at Selby Bay for instance doesn't answer either the phone
or the radio most of the time. They have a fuel dock and pump out,
but it is mostly for local traffic. Windmill Point often won't
answer the radio and neither will the marina on the Severn River off
Mobjack Bay or the marina in Reedville (especially on Monday when the
restaurant is closed). Tangier Island you usually have to just yell
to someone on shore when you get close enough for that, although you
can talk to them on the phone.
Most of the marinas in Baltimore harbor will answer the radio. Also
the marinas in Oxford, Deltaville, Crisfield, Solomons, in the
Yeocomico, and Coles Point.

I'm not sure about Chestertown, or Gratitude. I've never tried to
contact marinas in St. Michaels or Annapolis.

I've only tried to raise the Crab Claw restaurant in St. Micheals, and
the little harbor ferry. The ferry listens to channel 71, and the
barkeep has a portable VHF with which he calls the ferry for customers
who want to return to their boats. I called the restaurant once on 71 to
find out if there was a bit of dock space...they actually take
reservations.


We have a Chinese restaurant on Bedford Basin that used to monitor VHF.
They also have a nice little dock...and yes, the food is good.
