I have been searching under the assumption that a 30-32' J-Boat would
be a bear to single-hand, except for highly skilled/experienced
sailors, because it is built (light with substantial sail area)

A used J32C might be too expensive but I have sailed one off coast of RI
in thoughtless seas (why did they ever see the need to be that big)
without any sense of fear or regret. The boat is solid, easily single
handed, fast and comfortable below.

They aren't all the same in such matters as sail area vs displacement.
Even with that caveat, some older racing-oriented Js are easy for two
people to sail. The J35 and J27 are examples of this. The J30 was
intended to be a family cruiser racer and is also very manageable by a
non-athletic couple.

Some of the newer Js, with asymmetreical chutes and retractable bow
sprits should be much easier to single hand, and I have seen others
doing it, but haven't tried any myself.
