you mean you are looking at a grossly heavy, pitifully underpowered engine made
in some garage in Norway, rebuilt "some time ago" .... ..... and THEN .... ..... are asking for definitive advice from rec.boat.highschool on just how much this thing is worth???? Of course. Dude, an 9.9 hp outboard would be easier to fix and keep in running shape and would weigh several hundred pounds less. In addition, most any single cylinder recent production diesel inboard would weigh upwards of 250# less and be easy to keep repaired. For that matter, a Vyre (sp?) 7 hp, 2-cycle gasoline inboard would weigh close to 350# less (that means the boat would have 350# more load carrying capacity (use it for fuel if you wish. 350# of gasoline is about 55 gallons EXTRA fuel onboard, or about 150 *hours* more motoring time than the obese sabb engine. Thanks for the benefit of your wisdom. If I had any idea at all I would never have posted. "JAXAshby" wrote in message ... price of a 440 pound engine -- without starter motor -- that develops 10 hp flat out, throttle against the fire wall, motor built in Norway, "rebuilt a while back"? You tell us. Hi, Anyone have a clue what a Sabb 10hp (with drive) would be worth in he USA? It has been rebuilt a while back apparently. The owner wants an offer, but I have no idea what the motor is worth. Any comments would be appreciated. thanks, Neil McC. |

you mean you are looking at a grossly heavy, pitifully underpowered engine
made in some garage in Norway Sabbs are wonderfully suited for what they do best in a displacement hull. They will run forever with a minimum of care. They are as dependable as it gets. Sabb makes starter kits for them, but they can always be hand-cranked and will start at just about any temperature. Offer the guy $1000.00 bucks and be overjoyed if he takes it. If you are looking to power a displacment hull and understand the benefits of variable pitch, then this would be a gift. Good Luck ! Regards, Nils Klykken St. Pete, Florida |

The Sabbs are great engines, very reliable and quiet thanks to their super
big flywhell. They are easy to fix, easy to rebuild and the company as dealers in the US or will ship parts. I would pay up to $ 1,000.00 for a running 10 HP especially if it comes with the var. pitch prop and shaft. My only reservation is the HP, 10 HP is a little small for that very heavy Devlin design. Those old engines have great torque at low rpm but still, I would prefer to see a 20 in there. Again: it's a great engine. -- Jacques http://www.bateau.com "NKlykken" wrote in message ... you mean you are looking at a grossly heavy, pitifully underpowered engine made in some garage in Norway Sabbs are wonderfully suited for what they do best in a displacement hull. I would pay up to $ 1,000.00 for a running 10 HP especially if it comes with
the var. pitch prop and shaft. It *HAS* to come with the variable pitch prop and shaft. That is the ONLY transmission made for the engine. Those old engines have great torque at low rpm HP = torque times rpm. If it has just 10 hp and it achieves this hp at lower rpm it MUST have higher torque (otherwise it wouldn't make 10 hp), and this means it MUST have more cubic inch displacement. There is zero point zero advantage to "more torque". It is the hp you need to drive the boat. A 90,000 rpm turbine engine, or 12,000 rpm racing 2-cycle, or 9,500 rpm racing 4-cycle, or a 6,000 production 2-cycle, or 4,500 production 4-cycle, or a 3,000 production diesel, or a 1,500 rpm industrial diesel, or a 500 rpm mule diesel engine, or a 50 rpm steam engine, or 10 plough horses (actually, about 8 plough horses as Jimmy Watt kinds fibbed a bit about the strength of plough horses to help sell his steam engines), are ALL just 10 horsepower, and it *IS* the hp that drives the boat. but still, I would prefer to see a 20 in there. The 20 hp Sabb engine weights in at 880#, or well more than a 750 hp MoPar hemi. You REALLY have to like the _thought_ of a seriously heavy, low output *diesel* engine to think that the Sabb engines are anything useful. Think of it: a 880# engine that puts out less hp than a teenage boy's 180 cc motorcycle. Again: it's a great engine. As is a 2,000# 2hp steam engine in the right circumstance, but it gotta be a character type boat to be the right circumstance. A huge displacement, high torque, slow turning 10 hp motor puts out no more hp than a tiny displacement, high reving, low torque 10 hp motor. |

scooty, I built my first boat (a Professional Class A/B Racing Runabout)
between the fall and spring of year I was in 8th grade. What did you do in 8th grade? btw scooty, I started repairing engines professionally for adult men who couldn't the summer before I started Junion HS. How about you? When did you start? OK, folks. This is Jax Ashby. Famous or infamous on rec.boats (just do a google search) for just plain being a trouble maker. This guy is worse than a spammer and should probably be best ignored in most cases. We are a group of builders and folks who build and or want to build boats, and "rec.boats.highschool" is mostly a hands on group talking from experience or asking serious questions. Why Jax has brought his brand of spam/ego/flame to this group is beyond me, but remember, he can only do as much damage as we let him. I could be wrong but I doubt he gives two ****s about building boats, just likes to hear himself talk. Take it for what it's worth, I am sure he will have something nasty to say in return but I will let my posts on boatbuilding address my answers to anything this guy has to say. Well Jax Ashby, given the calibre of your postings, I wonder if you've
actually reached the 8th grade yet. To everyone else, many thanks for your comments. N. Neil baby, my mother used to say "There is NO one so stupid as he who won't
learn". You gotta remember that back in those days "he" meant anyone (man or woman). Go ahead and build that grossly obese boat with the grossly obese -- and punny power -- engine, all the while telling anyone who will listen -- all two of 'em -- what a genius you are for installing an engine that puts out an incredible 1 hp for every 45 pounds of engine weight (something not done on aircraft engines in 85 years, or car engines in 80 years or farm tractor engines in 65 years, or industrial gasoline engines in 60 years, or industrial diesel engines in 50 years). That's sorta like bragging about having a 48 inch ass. Be proud, dude. say, neil, didn't you a long time ago - about 6 years -- claim on the boatbuilding.com site to be a naval architect by training and profession? How come then you didn't know all this stuff? Maybe 'cuz you didn't know it 6 years ago either? Yeah, yeah
Get yourself the most horsepower for the lightest weight possible & then fill your keel up with lead!! lol. Then watch that lightweight, high revving, Japanese baby fly to pieces after 467 hours?
