so, what do you carry in your bag?
You're off to crew for at least 6 months...
The plan is to head for Panama, work as a line handler for a while, then when you find the right boat head off with them, probably to the carribean, maybe bahamas... might continue on after that across the atlantic. What do you put in the one bag that you take? Shaun |

Hi Jim,
This is a one bag only trip ;-) So if you want 'ditch' supplies, they have to fit in that bag. Along with clothing, entertainment, passport, money etc etc... It's a one-bag-only deal. What would you take? Shaun jim.isbell wrote: On Nov 28, 4:07 am, imagineero wrote: You're off to crew for at least 6 months... Shaun,
You are planning to pack a seabag that you will live out of for the foreseeable future - Correct? You plan to sail in warn climate, but plans get changed and you also have to pack to sail through a hurricane. Don't pack much of anything you KNOW you can buy along the way. It will not be a small bag, but it should contain: Good foul weather gear with boots, gloves and a harness (keep a baseball cap in the pocket, you need it to make the hood work) a long sleeve sweatshirt. a pair of solid trousers with good pockets. 2 extra pairs of shorts 4~6 underpants - you don't want to go "commando" because if something gets chaffed you will be in misery. 3 min - pairs of socks. barefoot is fine on the beach, but you will need these under the boots. 2 tee shirts, buy any more along the way as practical souvenirs. A towel, maybe a washcloth (hard to carry wet) Salt Water soap in a plastic soap box. pack your dap kit in a small ditty bag. Sunscreen Sunglasses (one complete spare) with strings and case Hat, spare not a baseball cap - it has to keep the sun off your ears Count on your seabag getting flooded - it will happen. A Dry Bag - Not a plastic freezer bag, but a waterproof fabric To contain, 1ea socks, underpants, tee shirt Your Passport, Z-card, your cash stock and anything water sensitive = When ashore in a foreign port, carry you money and passport in a good money belt under your shirt or it will be gone as soon as you get to the bazaar. so, add the money belt Important Note - American money in unique - all the cash in the rest of the world is printed on bad copier paper and will turn into a spitwad when it gets wet. (sound like experience?) I'm assuming you will be wearing A hat, A top shirt might be a Tee Shorts with a solid belt Good boat shores and caring a good rigging knife on a lanyard looped to the belt I lived out of a seabag for more than a few years and made some memories I love to share and some I never will. Just in case you loose all your papers, you still have something to prove who you are. I'm assuming you will be wearing [...] Shorts with a solid belt The inside of the belt is a good hiding place! and caring a good rigging knife on a lanyard looped to the belt There are some places where openly carrying a knife can be frowned upon, or misunderstood. Check before arriving, and carry in the bag if need be. Still, lots of good advice here. More comments welcome! -Heikki |

If it is from "experience" it must have been many many many moons ago.... Definitely tain't true nowadays... In the world of material used in manufacture of "folding" money the USA is years behind the times. Brian C |

FWIW long, long ago and far, far away I met a French woman who was traveling around the world. Mostly warm places, I guess, because her total wardrobe consisted of a pair of sandals, a very-expensive bikini, a pair of shorts, and a white blouse. She used the bikini as underwear - washed it every night. Seemed to work for her. She always looked good. -- PeteCresswell |
