Why didn't they lighten the boat up?

What were all those people doing loading up the boat
with more weight on deck? Stupid fools! There must
have been a dozen of them. Probably at least a ton of
excess weight on the boat--right there. That would drop
the waterline more than an inch.

If they offloaded everything on the boat, and waited for
a spring tide, they might have been able to save it.
