We don't want Thom to share our ideas. We want him to come up with better ones. That's why we'll never be "old farts." Bwahahahaha! And where will he be exposed to these "better ides"? In NY? Sure ..... from Rev Moon. I used to think like you until I got to be an "old fart". Edgar is right - you'll think your kid is FU'd and wonder why. A friend raised his girl to be a housewife. She works for an international corp, travels all over the world and makes $500K/yr at 40. Is he happy? No! She didn't give him any grandkids! I wanted SWMBO's kid to be like that. She dropped out, got married, had a kid, and sees a shrink twice a week. It never occurred to me that I'd be on the old side of a generation gap - but I am. I have nothing in common with y'all wimpy young city/suburban kids raised on Ritalin to have big mouths and zero tolerance for violence. Jeeze, the kids over on reeky motorcycles had cat because somebody dared to honk his horn at a car and my habit of closing car door on drivers heads gives them the willys. Like I said, I feel sorry for y'all. If WW II happened today, we'd loose. |

In 22 years behind a desk your friend never "pulled a gun". Did he even own one? And "marshall" arts? an even bigger joke. Martial arts are sports with rules - rules street fighters ignore. We used to go to the Karate dojos and slap the instructors around when I was in high school. Then I took a couple semesters of Judo in college and learned why - jeeze, we might as well have picked on basketball players. I don't need a weapon and if you ever learn to handle yourself, niether would you. We had a shop teacher in hi school who thot that. Fact is he could whip any five of us kids. So we brought six and sent him to the ER in a coma just to teach him a lesson you obviously never learned. Oh, I guess being a kid excluded exposure to the arts! It isn't necessary, or even desirable to be "exposed" by sitting in the middle of some crowded theater smelling the farts and perfume. There are literally 1000s of artists who are as good as any you'll find on stage who never "got noticed". Each of my many friends have paintings (some original, some copies) in their homes and most create their own music. Their kids learn to appreciate art by participating in it rather than being simple spectators. Would you believe there is an art to stomping somebody's head without killing him? |

Of course they dump 1000s of gallons of raw sewage every time it rains. That's why the bay is a cesspool almost as bad as LIS. But don't get caught taking a leak off your boat ...... That way any animal they kill deserved to die, and there is a real risk to the hunters. Hereabouts, we don't hunt - we harvest. Anybody who does not own a weapon after seeing what happened in New
Orleans when cops are not available is a fool. I purchased an AR15 for my "when the **** hits the fan" weapon. You might attract heavyier caliber return fire, or you may become all that much more attractive a target for theives who want your gun & ammo. Unless one has the capability... physical, intellectual, emotional, whatever.... to deliberately kill another human being without so much as an eyeblink of hesitation... one is better off with a different means of deterrent than a gun. That's the whole point of a great deal of military & police training. The next step is skill with the weapon. Special forces guys average 200 rounds per day of live fire training! You may only get into worse trouble. You might attract
heavyier caliber return fire, or you may become all that much more attractive a target for theives who want your gun & ammo. Not true. In New Orleans the only houses that were spared were the ones with people and weapons inside. Home owners with weapons protected themselves, their loveones and their STUFF! If you didn't have a weapon in your home the thugs/criminals were just walking in and telling anyone inside that they were taking what they wanted and that there was nothing you could do about it and the police would not be responding. Unless one has the capability... physical, intellectual, emotional, whatever.... to deliberately kill another human being without so much as an eyeblink of hesitation... one is better off with a different means of deterrent than a gun. My first plan would also be to get out of town. But remember I said a
SHTF condition. Shotgun would be to unwieldy inside of a house. Cut the barrel off and that's a problem with the law. AR15 packs plenty of punch if you are using 65 or 75 gr ammo. Normal is 45 or 55 gr. Also most AR15s shoot 5.56 which is harder hitting than 223. There's enough dead Iraqs to prove the AR is a good enough weapon. |

Bushmaster because of the chrome lined barrel. What length barrel? Do you have a flash supressor? what stock? what top? I bought a Bushmaster 16" carbine "Patrolman" model with the A3 top, collapsible stock. Yes it has a flash supressor. I didn't like the idea of a pinned and welded supressor on the 14" "shorty" model. I'm looking at optics at the moment. I liked Bushmaster for the chrome lined barrel, ability to shoot 5.56 and it's known quality construction. I didn't like the fact Colt uses non standard pins which would make swapping stuff impossible. I got a hellava deal from a kitchen table FFL dealer in Virginia. $860. MSRP was $1230. I'll drive an hour to save almost four hundred bucks. On top of that I ordered it from a distributor (who shipped to the retail dealer) that gives a lifetime warranty. If it ever breaks they send you a new one after a phone call. You get the new one and then ship them the broken one. http://www.galleryofguns.com/ |

My picks if I didn't care much about collateral damage: 1. flamethrower. Bit difficult to get hold of, tho. 2. pump action shotgun loaded with buckshot. 3. Any decent semiauto .308 loaded with 150 gr JHP 4. Any decent semiauto .223 loaded with 50gr JHP. The 308 loaded with FMJ is going to go thru the bad guy, his buddy behind him, the house behind *him* and maybe a few other items in the way. With JHP or a nice Nosler solid base boat tail soft nose, the bad guy is basically going to lose a limb with a hit there, or his chest is gonna dissolve. PDW |

Loaded with FMJ, I agree with you. Loaded with a nice hunting round - say a Sierra JHP or a soft nose 50gr pill, or a Nosler, no way. Whatever you hit is gonna be in a world of hurt and will lose all interest in your property, likely permanently. Remember, this isn't a sporting contest at this point. The rules of war WRT expanding projectiles don't apply. IMHO a shotgun would be much preferable. Depends. I'd rather have both a long gun and a shotgun. PDW |

A short barrelled shotgun is far more useful. 2. Using heavy FMJ bullets is also stupid. Use hollowpoints or soft nose rounds. The object is to transfer the kinetic energy into the target, not the wall, next house, etc etc. 3. There is NO DIFFERENCE between 5.56 NATO and .223 except the labels on the boxes. Go look up the SAAMI ammo spec if you don't believe me. I could dig out my reloading manuals and quote loads, bullet weights etc but frankly, I don't give a damn. Works wonders on nosy crocs, tho. I bet so, especially if you can get them to swallow it first. At one point in my life I spent a great deal of time splashing around in the swamps of northern Florida, and toted a .357 revolver (a Ruger Security Six to be specific). I kept it loaded with 3 rounds of snake shot and 3 rounds of varying hard shot. Alligators were very common and as long as I wasn't in the water with them, never minded them much. But one afternoon I felt it desirable to shoot a larger specimen, about 7' or so. He was close enough to poke with the canoe paddle, if I'd been minded to. Rotated the chamber to a solid shot (Winchester Silvertip IIRC), stood up, and plugged Mr Gator right between the eyes. He kicked around a bit in agitation, then swam away. Very tough critters. I hear the crocs are even tougher. DSK |

With JHP or a nice Nosler solid base boat tail soft nose, the bad guy is basically going to lose a limb with a hit there, or his chest is gonna dissolve. Yep. Especially at the ranges home defense is likely to occur. Long time ago, the story was that the U.S. military picked ..223 in preference to .308 so as to wound enemy soldiers rather than kill. Not out of humanity but because that way 2 of the wounded guy's buddies carry him to the rear, so 3 bad guys leave the fight. Another reason was so that wimpy U.S. men could pack more bullets into the fight. Neither reason applies to home defense, although the flatter trajectory might help produce hits. I like the idea of a sturdy rifle with a bayonet. Only a real psycho would rush a man with a bayonet. It's a terror weapon, especially after you see a live person gigged like frog before your eyes. It would help deter bad guys from trying to grab the gun away from you, too. In this day & time, I'd give consideration to non-lethal deterrents too. We discussed stun grenades a while ago. They are more effective than most people would believe, don't know if civilians can get them. Regards Doug King |
