Capt. Neal's

Joe

LOL! Katy, Mr. Sails, and Chopper, the white standard poodle, are quite
genuine, and have sailed with us on our boat. Well, okay, Chopper
didn't, even though he was invited. They've also slipped on our dock
for many seasons, save the last one or two, when they moved to a
different port. Now they've moved to a place I plan to live someday,
and no doubt we'll spend time with all three of them again.

Neal isn't original enough to create a sockpuppet as unique at Katy.

By the way, Katy, we just bought another poodle--a 12 week old black
toy. Had to drive to Minnesota to get *******her.**********

Max

Cool....boy or girl? How are they getting along together?

Female. She was the pick of the litter by the breeders--a consortium of
show people who have had best-in-breed and best-in group winners at
Westminster. Her dam was the top female toy poodle the past two years.
She was to have been their Best in Show prospect, but she ended up with a
tiny white spot on her chest that shows no signs of disappearing. Thus
she became a pet. She's gorgeous. I'll send you a photo by email. She
and Niki are doing fine, actually, which is a surprise to us. Nik
growled a bit the first day, but today she is passively tolerant and has
been playing with the pup some. I'm sure in no time they'll get along
famously. Another boat dog.

Max

That's great...and just enough time to get her potty-trained before
sailing season begins. Did the breeders make you sign a non-compete or
"must neuter" clause in case the white spot disappears?

Absolutely. The white spot will doubtlessly remain, but we still had to
sign an agreement to have her neutered. And she is already trained to puppy
pads, and is doing well with the outside routine. She seems to enjoy
emulating Niki.

So tell us what your boat's name is, and why you named it that.

Clover, the original name of the boat since launching, persisting through
two previous owners. Far be it from me to change her name.

We named our first boat--bought new--but haven't changed the names on any
successive boats (used). It's nice to meet people while cruising who can
give us some history or anecdotes about our boats, thanks to persistence of
the names.

a whole bunch of stuff about Red Cloud...

Joe, Have you read _Honta Yo_?

you mean Hanta Yo

Hanta Yo is a Lakota Souix term that means "clear the way". No I
haven't read it.

One of my favorite adapted Souix quotes.

Whenever, the course of a daily sail, the sailor comes upon a scene
that is strikingly beautiful, or sublime; a black thundercloud with the
rainbow's glowing arch above the horizon, a white waterfall in the
heart of a green gorge, a vast ocean tinged with the blood-red of the
sunset; he pauses for an instant in the attitude of worship. He sees no
need for setting apart one day in seven as a holy day, because to him
all the days are God's days.

Great Story Joe. I'd like to read more about it.

RedCloud is named after a strong American who never gave up fighting to
be free.

Much of Red Cloud's life was spent at war, first and most often against
the neighboring Pawnee and Crow, at times against other Oglala. In 1841
he killed one of his uncle's primary rivals, an event which divided the
Oglala for the next fifty years. He gained enormous prominence within
the Lakota nation for his leadership in territorial wars against the
Pawnees, Crows, Utes and Shoshones.

Beginning in 1866, Red Cloud orchestrated the most successful war
against the United States ever fought by an Indian nation. The army had
begun to construct forts along the Bozeman Trail, which ran through the
heart of Lakota territory in present-day Wyoming to the Montana gold
fields from Colorado's South Platte River. As caravans of miners and
settlers began to cross the Lakota's land, Red Cloud was haunted by the
vision of Minnesota's expulsion of the Eastern Lakota in 1862 and 1863.
So he launched a series of assaults on the forts, most notably the
crushing defeat of Lieutenant Colonel William Fetterman's column of
eighty men just outside Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, in December of 1866.
The garrisons were kept in a state of exhausting fear of further
attacks through the rest of the winter.

Red Cloud's strategies were so successful that by 1868 the United
States government had agreed to the Fort Laramie Treaty. The treaty's
remarkable provisions mandated that the United States abandon its forts
along the Bozeman Trail and guarantee the Lakota their possession of
what is now the Western half of South Dakota, including the Black
Hills, along with much of Montana and Wyoming.

That and she's red and rides like a cloud.

I renamed my Ericson ECHO because the previous name Intrepid
was not only common, but for some reason everyone screwed it
up. I decided on ECHO because it is short enough to fit on a
narrow transom, it is a phonetic letter, and very easy to use on the
radio. I'm an Electrical Engineer and my Ham radio Call Sign is N1EE.
So far no one has screwed up the name on the radio or otherwise.
My view is boat names belong on the transom and should be both
easy to read at a great distance-which means a simple block font
a large size and an uncomplicated name to both read and understand.

My Etchells is named HOOT. I stole the name from a boat sold
by a former Etchells skipper of mine. When he sold his previous
boat, an Olson 30 named HOOT, the new owners insisted on keeping
the name. HOOT has a wide reputation on the SF Bay and has had
it's picture in Lat-38 many times. The was one photo that was either
a cover of full page spread of it broaching under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Since I'm on the east coast, I figured that was far enough away. For
a future project, I have a cool graphic of an owl I want to paint on a
white spinnaker.

I have two Sunfishes, PATRIOT and a new one named THREAT
that will be a loaner boat for visiting friends. I named PATRIOT
after the sail I chose for the boat which was red, white, and blue.
Being a Patriots fan, it was an easy choice. When I bought the
second boat, I wanted a name that would complement the first.
I thought of SCUD, which means move very quickly or hastily,
and the military association between the two missiles is obvious,
however I didn't like the sound of it. I chose THREAT because
of the current poliltical situation where PATRIOTs are fighting
THREATs, both foreign and domestic.
