Whats with the torpedo belt of armor? Joe Riveted steel hull. Built in 1921. The last couple refits have found extensive corrosion inside and there were doubling plates welded over in spots. She hasn't lost any of her charm though. Maybe a little slower. |

I had some corrosion in my sail locker. When I replaced the bad steel I
welded it flush. Don't you feel that doubling plates in the long run causes serious electrolysis issues and should be avoided? How thick is her hull? 1/2" I ran a rivited tug in the early 90's. 1" thick hull that had 3 feet of rust mud in the bilge with a few cement piles. What a nightmare that tug was. Joe |

Joe We have used some pretty good modern paints on the hull inside and out now. Corrosion is always an issue but it is not my boat, and it is the Navy's decision on how to take care of it. I am the driver. I think it is 3/8" plate |

Well they screwed her up IMO.
As commanding officer ... I would inform Commodore Dan Murphy and request a proper job the ship is due. The forman that supervised the re-fits should stand in front of the Captain's mast and explain why he did such a half ass job that is going to ...in the long run...screw up more then it ever fixed. Joe Steel Hull Restoration Expert It's all money driven. Fix it now or fix it later. With a boat like Oriole, there may not be a later.....in the Navy anyway. Her continued status as a Naval ships is always a point of discussion. |
