Loco, I suggest you talk to a legal immigrant... not hard to find,
your
doctor may be one... and ask them about how the INS treats them.
Doctors
have it particularly tough because over the past 5 years the AMA has
made it all but impossible for a foreign doctor to get licensed. Like
we
have a surplus or something..

I didn't know the INS bothered anybody. I know a number of foreign
doctors and I have not once ever heard them mention the INS. Secondly
they all seem to be doing very well. Are the doctors your talking
about citizens? As far as foreign doctors having a tough time getting
licensed I've never heard of such a thing and my wife is in the medical
profession. Doug, are you aware of the scam foreign doctor wannabes
have been pulling for years? The U.S. pays their freight to come to
this country and go to medical school with the understanding when they
are done they will go back to their country and help their people. Big
problem ........... they don't go back. If your story is true maybe
things are catching up to them because there is a surplus. I do hear
stories all the time about qualified American kids who can't get into
medical school.

If they were, the INS would not be an issue. We were talking about legal
immigrants, the kind who can be (and often are) sent home again. Usually
for some silly paperwork oversight, or even an outright mistake by the INS.

Really? That's funny, *every* single foreign doctor I've ever talked to
about the subject (at least 100) has said it's a PITA... some of them
had much worse things to say.

OTOH there is a point to the difficulty... a foreign medical education
is not the same as here. Most other countries do not have the technology
that we currently employ (although that's changing rapidly)

That's not what I'm talking about

Can you show any documentation of any U.S. or state program that "pays
the freight" of medical school for foreign nationals? I am aware fo some
grants but they are LOANS. In many cases, foreign students are supported
by their own gov't but not ours.

Heck, even the U.S. military does not 'pay the freight' in full for
medical school any more. And that has to be paid back in full plus more,
and not all in cash if you know what I mean.

If there is a surplus of doctors, then why are medical costs going up so
much? Why are there fewer and fewer doctors per capita in most areas of
the US, especially in critical specialties... most notably the ones at
the top of the liability list like neurosurgeons and OB-GYNs.

Anyway, ask at your doctors office... how many people know of Canadian,
British, or Australian nurses that used to work over here, and now have
gone back where they came from?

Back in the 1990s it was a problem in engineering that Swedish, German,
Asian, etc etc engineers were all coming over here. Now we have to go
over there. Ditto grad students in various advanced fields.

This is one of those situations where the more you look into it, the
worse it seems.

FOr reasons that Scotty might explain to you, I am certainly not out of
touch with what happens with med school admissions.

Please give me an example of a foreign student... particularly a
non-U.S. citizen... gaining admission in preference over an American. It
may have happened now & then but it's darn sure very rare.

And what kind of an example am I supposed to provide for your quiz? A
sir name and class of ? Ridiculous question. So you are involved in
some way with med schools. Then I don't have to take you for a walk on
campus at Maryland or Hopkins. You must be involved at a small private
school in Southern Maryland.
