Do you know what we call people from the town of Plano just outside of
Dallas?

During Footballs season maybe...mostly Plano People.

The plano lens is either convex-concave on one side and Plano Flat on
the other. If just flat then it is not a lens. . That simple Max.

Hi Joe
If "lens" is a universally accepted nautical term for a hatch glass I
don't see any problem using it. After all we don't call the line
attached to the mainsail the mainrope. At least the people I sail with
don't.

I live in this universe, have lived and worked on boats since 1977 and
have never heard the term "lens" used for the proper term "Glass" in a
port. If we slack up on the little things.. then you open the door for
people to slack on the proper terms of the importamt things. On boats,
and for sure sailboat knowing the proper terms and names might keep you
from getting injured or killing someone. Crytal clear concise terms can
mean the difference of life of death.

But hey thats just my opinion, Please feel free to run your boat any
way you want to...

Major hatch manufactures such as BOMAR use the term "Lens" when
describing their products. It's an industry term. It may (or may not)
be jargon, but it is legitimate usage. It's the term marine
professionals use.

Bob,

This is a proper
porthole:http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/i...00/i01577t.jpg

Any fleet sailor will tell you that if your shut this porthole the
glass reads "ARMORED GLASS" not armored lens. Boman sells product to
the Navy. The Navy is a stickler on proper nautical terms last timed I
checked.

Sunglasses have lenses and yet do not alter the vision.

Actually they do.

Yeah okay... I see what you mean... polarization, colour etc.
So do hatch lenses.... in Lexan.

Nope, the Navy is a stickler for using term it deems correct....it
ignores many in common useage!

Aw come on Ozone.... it took a team of 10 people sixteen days to come up
with that label for military portholes.

Katy looks through "crazed rose-colored" lexan and she wonders why she
doesn't see things too clearly.

What twaddle....this is a ng, mt dear...Do I have to keep reminding you of
that? You've obviously confused it with real life. Now go take a Midol and
have a cup of tea...green, preferably, it's better for you...and enjoy your
nice fresh air...

Yeah, the NAVY is such a stickler for accuracy and proper marine

call some of their staff by a name that the dictionary says is

actually a large

those NAVY
seals can balance a beachball on their nose, either!
