lens \"lenz\ n [L lent-, lens lentil; so called fr. the shape of a convex lens] 1 : a curved piece of glass or plastic used singly
or combined in an optical instrument for forming an image; also : a device for focusing radiation other than light 2 : a transparent
body in the eye that focuses light rays on receptors at the back of the eye

Wrong you both are... deep submersibles use a 10" "lens" as a view port

Sunglasses have lenses and yet do not alter the vision.

The pair of you should try learning as an option to spouting.

Right you are yet again, Joe. Thanks for backing me up
with your usual common sense and knowledge of boating
related issues.

I tried to tell that ignorant putz, JR, the same thing but he
is too smug and self-absorbed to listen to the facts.

the manufacturers and dealers call them lens.

They do that so they can charge suckers more.

It is not a lens. A lens is a transparent optical device used to
converge or diverge transmitted light and to form images.

Hope this helps

Joe

Wrong again Mooron. Subs have viewing ports not lenses unless the are
concave or convex and reshape light transmitted thru them. .

Only reason sunglasses have Lenses is because they are a rip off of the
proper name of perscription lenses used in standard eye glasses that
predate sunglasses. The proper terms is sunglasses or filters, not
sunlenses.

You should try learning before spouting off.

Quit being a Pane in the ass....

If I lost 30 lbs. I'd be emaciated...Mr Sails would not appreciate that at
all...

Glass is a heck of a lot heavier than Lexan...which makes a difference
for anyone that has a performance boat...I'd stick with Lexan...

If you were really worried about performance of your French Failure,
you would go on a diet and lose about thirty pounds. Mr. Sails would
appreciate THAT a lot more than a hatch that weighed two pounds less.

Negative - you have Horvath's girlfriend . . .

Really? And what exactly does a plano lens do?

Actually they do.

So should you, Joe. Lenses do a wide variety of things, including causing
light to diverge or converge, as you've implied. They occasionally do
nothing at all, such as with plano lenses. They can act as light filters,
as with sunglass lenses. They can neither diverge nor converge light, but
bend light, aka prismatic lenses. They can affect color vision, aka colored
filter lenses. They can simply reduce light level without coloration, aka
neutral density lenses. And the list goes on, and they are ALL properly
called lenses.

So are those glass or resin plano "windows" in portholes, etc. It's a
traditional term in those cases.

A simplistic layman's definition at best, and far from inclusive or
esoteric. Plano lenses, for example, used in spectacles are curved both
front and back, and allow light to pass through them without being
refracted. Should I continue?
