A minor thing like a broken boom does not compare to a capsize. A capsize happens because of bad judgment on behalf the helmsman while a broken boom happens because of extended wear and tear on systems that are decades old and in almost constant use. In other words, a mechanical failure is entropy expressing itself. Contrariwise, a capsize on a multi-hull is more often the doing of an operator expressing his or her poor judgment or skills.
