It's a variation of chicken gybing.. turn very quickly from DDW to just
above beam reach on the new tack, the main comes over hard but doesn't
come up against the sheet or the rig, just luffs on the new side. Then
quickly bear away to new course. You can do it while surfing, but of
course the risk is getting caught by the crest while turning.

You can have that all to yourself!

Okay... maybe I'll patent it and start collecting licensing fees

It works very well, the faster the boat the better.

Oh Goody!
Did he keep his job?

heh heh
he was one of the co-owners, as was I... it came up in discussions about
who was going to drive!

Better at what?

I'd have to check between *her* legs personally before
I'd be fool enough to believe she's a woman.

Take a good look at that kisser. It wouldn't surprise me if
*she* has to shave.

She's not asking you for a date, so why do you care? Your preference in
women is not everyone's preference....that does not negate her abilities as
a sailor....Be a man..admit you're jealous....

Ellen is in way over her head.

Ellen'll capsize and be out of the race.

I hope Ellen doesn't go getting *herself* killed.

That any man here actually believes *she* has the skill and
endurance to beat the record pretty much proves you are
all delusional.

I can see a good use for my Voodoo doll. Ellen is going down!

Cappy, maybe you could read this

WHY IS THIS RECORD SO EXCEPTIONAL:
1800+ people have reached the summit of Everest... 450+ people have
been in space... 12 astronauts have stepped on the moon... 6 solo
sailors have attempted to race around the globe NON-STOP on MULTIHULLS
(the fastest and most extreme boats to traverse the oceans)... Only 1
succeeded to go the distance non-stop and set a new world record...

Francis Joyon, current solo round the world record holder, set off on
22.11.03 and finished 72 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes and 22 seconds
later on 3.2.04 to set a new world record. This is the time MacArthur
has to beat.

It's a bugger when that happens.
I co-owned my first Etchells and the guy thought he was a genius
because his uncle was one of Oz best sailors, tactitians and
navigators, but unfortunately he was hamfisted.

Co-owning can be nice, it cuts the cost... although this particular boat
was still pretty expensive to campaign... and it's easier to come up
with regular crew. We had 5 very enthusiastic regulars, 3 good drivers,
1 learner, and this guy. He was actually very enthusiastic and not so
much stuck on himself as he was forgetful.

One of the keys (IMHO) to becoming a good sailor is to realize that no
race is ever sailed perfectly, there is always more to learn, and that
there are impending mistakes lurking every step of the way.

I know one certain cure for your hamfisted friend. Tie the tiller to
center with shock cord! I sailed with a German youth who was a great
natural skipper... not so much on tactics but I've never seen anybody
who could make a boat go faster... and he barely moved the tiller at
all, except when roll-tacking. It was an education to watch him.

I was just kidding. I don't have to put a hex on poor little Ellen.

Why?

She's in way over her head and will do herself in by pushing
it too hard. That's what's she's done in the past; that's what
she will do again. You shall see. I am rarely wrong about such
things.

So, did you know that your boom was going to snap when the breeze puffed up
