Dunno what you guys pay per call but for us, INMARSAT is about AUD $8 a minute, Iridium $2-3 a minute. Call quality is a lot better on INMARSAT. We have a new Fleet 77 system as well but no idea on cost. Personally I think the call costs are too cheap by at least an order of magnitude. You can be peacefully stooging about halfway to Africa and down around 64S and some turkey in the office wants to know something so they just call up...... Worse than email, at least you can just ignore that until you feel like replying (or get back to port, whichever comes first). The *******s *know* you're on the ship somewhere. PDW |

We can put this boat into a single marina berth stern to in 20kts of x wind quickly, easily and safely without the rush to get a line on the bow before it starts to swing. Oz1...of the 3 twins. Any idea how much speed is lost from one, if any? None at all, if you get the really cool expensive retracable kind. There are a couple of things to reduce drag from the tunnel. One (simple & cheap) is to work up a sort of fairing at the leading edge of the tunnel so that the flow is diverted when the boat is moving forward... helps but not perfect, obviously. Another is to make the tunnel as small as possible, except that this reduces the amount of horsepower you can get into play; which can be helped by putting it deeper & further forward. I agree with Oz1, there are times & places where a bow thruster is really handy. It greatly extends the range of maneuvering possibilities in tight places and crosswinds. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
Last time I backed into the slip with a strong x wind, I went much
further down the fairway, backed her pretty fast, made the turn and stopped just in time. I was kinda proud of the 'parking job' I did, till I reached for a dock line and noticed I was in my neighbors' slip. Scotty "DSK" wrote in message ... Sat Phone!!.... Coastal!!!... Bwahahahahahahahahahaaaaa
Do you have a clue as to how ridiculous that is! Nope. It costs very little and is only to be used in an emergency. Since and expensive system is on board, why not keep it operational? Cell phones don't always work and being able to make a call in a medical emergency seems like a good thing. RB |
A Sat Phone???? What the heck ?? Do you know how much a month it costs to
have a Sat Phone Activated ...... let's not even calc the rate per call! I'll have a small child on board. To keep the phone in standby is 90.00 per month. I'll take that extra little safety net, thank you. RB |
Now where on the East or West Coast of the Continental US is there an area
without cellular service?? Whole sections of the LIS are without service or have poor service. I've switched phones 3 times to attain better signals. Verizon is currently the best. It works 75% of the time. RB |

How bout your new boat everyone gonna **** over, what kind of range do
you think it has? Uh, Joe...Sailboats have unlimited range. RB |

Nutsy,
Sailboat do not have unlimited range. Never did and never will. The limiting factors; People and their needs. Provisions and water!! That is one of the big factors of the success of power. Trip planning with a known time period and known provisioning needs. That, Nutsy, is why a stall shower is a damn waste. Empty space! Ole Thom |
Are you a typical NY yacht club pansie or what...
Your statement is pathetic. Since everyone agreed that a bow thruster can be of use on some situations, I guess you just got your foot deeply down your own throat. Maybe Scotty Potti can suck it out for you....??? Bwahahahahahaha! RB |
I worked for years and years on 50+ diffrent 100' to 165' boats and
only one had a bow thruster. Yeah, and I sailed for years on boats without Radar. What's your point? That because we got along without it it has no value? Joe, seriously. Very Seriously. You're really really stupid. Bwahahahahaha! RB |

That, Nutsy, is why a stall shower is a damn waste. Empty space!
It's only a waste of space if you don't like a nice hot shower aboard. You could also make the case that most of the berths on board are a waste of space as well. RB |

I suppose if you use water aboard like you do at home, water tank size might be an issue, I've never heard it, OTOH, a lot of contemporary blue-water boats have watermakers, I guess it might have something to do with "couples" and the possibility that women might want to shower more frequently than men. Yeah Nutsy,
