Joe

people who have been hit "with a blizzard and freezing weather" know it ain't
nuthin but a day off from school. A good thing 'cuz you can go ice skating
that day and it breaks up the week.

We don't get blizzards very often and blizzards and freezing weather don't
do the damage that a hurricane does. I'm not in love with the cold, but i
surely wouldn't be in love with flooding or having the sides torn off my
house. Or for that matter, having to run out with the boat to save it from
being smashed ashore....

And you can snowmobile down the middle of the street before the salt trucks
appear....

Every place on Earth has it's problems. Most have some compensating
blessings, although you may have to look really hard...

True, but it's a PITA and it lasts a lot longer.

That only happens to people who live in the wrong place, for example,
shifting sandbars that happen to be above high tide for a few years in a
row... or filled swampland... or alluvial plains downstream of several
large river basins... or just downhill from the huge new mall parking
lot... the list goes on and on...

Flooding along the Mississippi system is a bigger problem that
hurricanes, and it happens as regularly as winters up North

... Or for that matter, having to run out with the boat to save it from
being smashed ashore....

Now *that* is a real concern. It's worse that the boat is a 3 hour drive
away. The staff at our marina is very good, which helps.

Ya know...I just can't see my employers understanding taking off to save my
boat....they would probably think I was ready for commitment....I suppose
when the whole rest of the area is under siege, employers understand...When
I still had the horses a thunderstorm popped up with tornado warnings and
heavy lightning warnings...I ran home to put the horses in, since two of
them were shod (and a horse down the street had been killed the year before
by being struck...) They thought I was nuts....oh well...

To some extent, yes. In this case, anybody who cared enough could have
driven down on Friday night or early Saturday morning and had plenty of
time to secure their boat.

In our case, I hate having the boat that far away. But I am lucky in
that I have a lot of leeway in taking off to go take care of it... as
long as work isn't falling too far behind...

Of course they thought you were nuts. Horse people (and we have several
in the family) are nuttier than sailors... and that's saying a LOT! It
must be an even higher priority to take proper care of a horse.

Yeah...they tend to doe after a while of neglect whereas you can always get
out the sander and a new can of varnish for the boat....

The hospital administrators I worked for would understand taking off for a
boat mission before they would let an employee go for a sick kid. Rotten
*******s.
