Ah, but I do, we sailed with only a compass, and then only a compass and
radio for years....If any of the hitorical figures you mentioned had
instruments, they might have been better off, known where they were going,
and foreseen problems.


Well, apart from monitoring the weather reports, we also sailed with
only a compass and some charts for many years. I was doing fairly well
with dead reckoning on several trips.
