Default Kite Surfers and Coll Regs.

Good lord. I thought the Colreg term vessel was all inclusive.

Kite surfers Are something new in the last year
or so. They are not in any of the list of vessels.

The COLREGS have been revised to include a new
classification for WIG (wing in ground) vessels but
no consideration has been given to kite surfers.

Kite surfers are not, by the definition sailboats
because they have no sails. The kite is attached
to the operator and not to the board. A board
is neither a sailboat nor is it a motor boat to
be sure. At present it is a gray area under the
Rules that needs to be cleared up.

I hope this helps.

Yes they are included in ColRegs. When in doubt refer to Rule 2. Always.

Rule 1 INTERNATIONAL (a) These rules apply toall vessels upon the high
seas and in all waters connected therewith navigable by sea going vessels.

Rule 1 INLAND (A) These Rules apply to all vessels upon the inland waters of
the United States . . . . . .

Rule 3 General Definitions

INTERNATIONAL and INLAND the same

(a) The word 'vessel' includes every description of water craft, including
nondisplacement craft and seaplanes, used or capable of being used as a
means of transportation on the water.

and Yes this includes surfboards. rowboats, Tom Sawyer's raft . . . .and
Wind or Kite Surfers.

(c) The term 'sailing vessel' means any vesel under sail providing that
propelling machinery, if fitted is not being used.

It's a common trick question on the tests

End of Discussion

ColRegs are all inclusive. Except for those who don't understand the
English (or any other ) language or think themselves above the law. I wanna
be there when Mr. Sea Lawyer tries to tell that sea story to the Coast Guard
with nothing going for him but his . . . . in his hand. Gee Judge! When
that law was written they only had dugout canoes with poles. . . . uhhhh .
.. . .you mean using paddles counts????? Damn .. . . HOW much was that
fine? You gotta be kiddin. .. . How many days? uhhhh Damn .. .

Don't worry about it Nav. There's always some DS who tries to get over.
They usually spend all their time justifying simple minded silliness .
..Kinda like being a mouth piece for J. Carville insteading of thinking for
oneself . . . instead of spending it on the water. But to keepthings
interesting ....try this discussion point. In the same vein as Democrats
and Republicans being two sides of the same coin. Bobsprit and Neal .. .
..Twins with no difference. Give it a fair, impartial and objective
evaluation: The answer is "None"

Except . .. . . . .I have to admit Neal has got one thing going for
him....better judge of women than I. Gotta give credit where it's due.

Speaking of which and spending time on the water ...we've got our marching.
.. .or rather sailing schedule. Back to the future (across the 180th again).
Should be outta here by Thanksgiving on either this ship or another one and
that's something to be Thankful for! Another five six months of this and the
refit should be paid for. . . . . .and I'm ALMOST back on schedule.

Still I've got another week or so and then the fun of .asa is over.
