You're reading way to much into my inquiry about bottom contours.... like Bob you probably think you have to actually dive down and map it... that was just too funny! Don't you verify if the charted depth conforms with your depth sounder readings at regular intervals Oz??? CM |

My depth sounder only reads to 500'. At 1.5 miles offshore I'm in over
500' of water depth. How can I chart the bottom contours? Capt. Draw a straight line, label it 500' then draw a hideous sea monster under
it. Scout "Kelton Joyner" wrote At 1.5 miles offshore I'm in over 500' of water depth. How can I chart the bottom contours? |

How can I chart the bottom contours? signed: Over My Head Dear Over My Head, This is a common problem for coastal sounders used in deep water. I suggest you upgrade to a larger more powerful professional grade unit. If this proves not practical just use your advanced knowledge of seastate to confirm your multiple GPS, Sextant and Dead Reckoning Plots. Once you return to the continental shelf your cheapo coastal unit will once again provide confirmation of correct seafloor contours. I have toyed with the idea of using powerful underwater speakers and a sound system approaching the power generated by the unit currently on Bob's boat "Alien"... this could be utilized to scramble the sonar array on passing subs. Once they surface to investigate the cause you can inquire as to the actual depths as they board your vessel. Good Luck and Fair Winds. Capt. Mooron |

If you are just sailing along and not on a Cousteau expedition or =
anything, why would you care what the depth was beyond 500 feet? It's = not like if you dropped anything OB you could retrieve it from that = depth, or that you'd actually want to visit with any of the denizens who = live there. It's not like you'd actually have a keel that would bong on = anything that deep. As long as your depth sounder was working well so = that when you got less than 500 feet it would start working again, = wouldn't that be sufficient? Maybe you could jury rig the thing so that = an alarm would go off when you hit 500 feet again...heaven help you = would not want to miss going into the shallows like that. Or maybe you = like anchoring at the depth? You must have an awfully big anchor locker = to hold that much chain and rode. Don't you get tired hauling it all = back up again? And aren't you afraid that the swing on the rode will = put you into the shipping lanes?
