Default Flying with canoes?

Does anybody have any information on flying to Europe with a canoe.
The boat in question is a 12'8" Mohawk. The destination is France.

I assume you mean a whitewater boat?

off hand, I'd say to look into buying or borrowing a boat when you get
there. Air frieght charges may be such that you would not want to pay
to fly the boat back home again! I think there are proper whitewater
open boats in Europe. I have seen Old Town disco's car topped, if
they can get there, someone is likely shipping whitewater boats too.

Wilko, any ideas for this fellow??

Yes, I do have some ideas, Dan. :-)

Steve Frazier and Julie Keller flew to France three or four years ago
for our RBP paddling trip in Europe. Their boats (I think Steve
paddled a Dagger Caption at the time) were shipped as air cargo, not
as luggage, with both canoes being packed, one inside the other, and
filled with gear. Steve mentioned paying a lot less because he shipped
the boats several weeks (if not longer) before he and julie came over.

I'm pretty sure that he flew into Northern Italy instead of France,
but if the French Maritime Alps are the destination, that's
practically around the corner.

I know that this isn't much, especially with 9/11 and such happening
since, but it might be a start...
