I'm currently looking at a 30' single hull of shore HULL ONLY that someone
it town just wants to get out of their driveway. The Hull has been sitting
for 5 years but the only problems seem to be the clear coat on the boat
peeling. Since this boat does not currently have any engines or drives I'm
wondering what my options might be? The boat is setup for twin Big Block
motors however Since nothing is in place yet I can do what I like. I'm not
worried about high end speed and the boat will be mostly used in the great
lakes and just getting away from shore and doing some touring and possibly
some skiing. Since I love diesel does this even sound like an option? Other
recommendations.

Obviously like 99% of the world cost is an issue and I will sacrifice speed
for cost, but it would be nice if whatever I install is upgradeable so that
I have the option to pull the motors and tweak them..

Without much to go on I'll give it a shot.

Will you do the work yourself? If you hire it out, $35 to $85 an hour (or
more) can add up real fast.

If you stick with a 're-install' of the same type equipment that came out (a
bolt-in operation) you can do it yourself pretty easily. As for $$, get a
list of the equipment, call your local sources and check online. You do the
math. Talk to local Marine Mechanics and learn, learn, learn.

involves cars, motorcycles, diesel compressors and tons of other stuff but
never a boat. The Hull I am looking at is a virgin hull and has never had
engines or drives. Tanks are installed and that's about it. I just want to
know if it's even worth taking on this project with a free hull or if I'd be
cheaper buying a boat? I find as much joy in the project as I do using it.

I'm no expert but ... if it was me, I'd look into installing an inboard
diesel rather than taking on installing two engines and outdrives (big
bucks, I/Os are overly complex for what they do imo). I have a small (19')
I/O runabout ... if I was in deep water, I wouldn't even consider an I/O ...
it would be an inboard for sure.

Is the transom intact? If so, consider an outboard mount. Check
the cost of engines, new and used, to fit. Consider installation
labour. Can you do it yourself?

Consider the coat of engine /s vs a used boat afloat. Do you want
to spend money to buy a big job that will never pay off, or do you
want to go boating?

Would you consider being the freak with lee boards and a jerry
rigged sail? An A frame, forestay and backstay can sail, if you
don't mind looking like a goof who has worked out the secret of the
universe and low fuel costs.

If you do not go with turboshaft, you might as well stay home. Anything
that uses the same engine as my mother's station wagon is not
interesting at all. But lack of vibration and the smell of jet-A makes
a neat change of pace from the antique piston engine stuff.

By the by - rec.boats.racing is largely dicussions of RRS05 (Racing
Rules of Sailing) and tactics. Stay with r.b.r.power.

I thought about going with a really large parachute, send it up into the
wind and sail off, I could always row back to shore. Actually The Hull and
transom are in great shape but it is setup to have inboard motors. I'm
wondering if I would be able to get decent power with inboard diesels or if
I'm just blowing smoke? What drives would you look at?

REMEMBER I'm new to boats the only thing I've played with in the past is
HULL design for Power Cats. Nothing drive related.

If you have a need to ski, or just to entertain a hurry, you will
appreciate the info posted else the penta "pod" drive. It means
a hole in the bottom, but the tech could work out. I hear the pod
is designed to shear off without leaking if it meets a rock. The
diesel economy looks good. A small engine will get you fishing and
camping, if that's what you want in a boat. Installing a small
engine will pave the way for the dual supercharged cat diesels you
really want.

An A frame sail rig, or a kite / parachute, and leeboards is not so
mad if using the motor need not be any faster. If you could get 6 or
8 knots out of a funny sail, would you do it?

You might pull a skiier behind a seadoo or
http://www.flyingbeachboat.com with the wing off for the same money,
which could serve as a cool tender on davits. Let the general
population laugh at that row. All at less than the cost of one good
gas engine installed properly to get you up on plane;-) The saving
in fuel could pay for it all. If you tow a phone number, you could
start your own flight school and retail distributorship. Then, go
for the speed, you could afford it.

Regardless of motors can anyone recommend some outdrives for an inboard
diesel that I should look at? I'd like to look for something used, once I
know what to look for I can google for more information
