I found this site with 12 gage pepper shells for loading into a hand
held flare gun:
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalo...specialty-ammo
This would avoid buying a "real" gun for defending ones sailboat from
pirates. Thoughts?

If the pirates are eight-year-old girls or dumb little big-mouth schitts
like loogy, herring, or florida jim, maybe.

Real pirates? They inhale pepper spray to clear their sinuses.

If you are afraid of pirates, get yourself a stainless steel shotgun in
12 gauge and practice with it out on a range. Put a light coat of
protective coating on the shotgun, clean it up once a month at least,
and stow it on boat in a dry bag.

Don't do it.

You might irritate them.

This may make them even more angry.

If you're going to shoot at pirates please try and kill them.

Shooting 12 guage shells in a flare gun is not very smart. The flare
gun has a tendency to blow apart which would leave you injure and the
pirates laughing.

Hm, being gay isn't part of the pirate image. :-) I thought rum,
buggery and the lash was the British navy, which some became pirates to
escape. However, these are Somali pirates... "For children, a woman; for

So bring an RPG launcer yourself. Better yet, how about a MILAN or

Can you adapt a Stinger missile or SAM-7 for surface-to-surface use?

I think there was a bit more to it than that. It was a big, fast
ship which used the weapon, along with its size and speed, to evade
the attack....and still got hit with an RPG round. I can't imagine
those tactics would be as successful with a smaller, slower
craft....at least not as effective as a couple .50 cals or Mk-19s.

Drop a piano on them. They don't pay the crews of the ships captured

True. If someone wants your boat there it's probably drug

There is a place right downtown in London called Execution Dock.
Legend is that they would peg down pirates on the river bottom at low
tide. Drowning occured when the tide came in. For the modern
variation, chain them to their boat and shoot a not very big hole in
it.

More than ship has driven off pirates with high pressure water hoses.
Not really non lethal. At least blowing the eyeballs out of their
heads would be pretty easy.

The fact is that you are dealing with people who just don't care and won't
be deterred by anything other than lethal force. What you have to decide is
whether you are willing to do the same. If I were wishing to deter them I
would get a semi-auto rifle like a 30.06 with a few extra clips and be done
with it and hope they don't get me first. Other than that, I would just give
in and hope they spare your lives. You could probably pick up 2-3 decent
used semi-autos and plenty of ammo for a couple of thousand bucks or less at
a gun shop. As a matter of fact, the best thing to do is to go to a gun shop
and tell the owner what you need and he will give you some advice on arms
and ammo that will do you best. You can't defeat hand grenades with a letter
opener...........

pirates. *Thoughts?

All I can say is if the gun is plastic (which some, are...) your in
for a big surprise...

They'd have to be rated for the plastic gun - which would be a lot
less charge than in your standard Remington 870 type hunting shotgun!

I'm with William Black on Pirate defense, if you want a weapon please
use a really effective one!

Modern pirates use RPG launchers. *You have to match fire power.

* *So bring an RPG launcer yourself. *Better yet, how about a MILAN or
Sagger anti-tank missile? *You could *out*-gun them that way!

* *Can you adapt a Stinger missile or *SAM-7 for surface-to-surface use?
You'd have even more range and flexibility that way.

letter from my shipping company, *it's called *'The Terrorist Shipping

I'm sure the company would have some serious hurdles. As for
terrorists they can get some pretty nasty stuff already.

What sort?

Small freighters are available for less than 'telephone number' money. I
found half a dozen in a web search that took less than ten minutes, all for
less than a million dollars US

A limited company can be bought in the UK for £100 and its registered
address can be a sympathetic lawyer's office.

And then you've got an Arab owned British shipping company (ship registered
in Liberia of course) that's doing business in the area and has a perfect
right to the stuff.

Invent a couple of small trading companies and ship cheap rubbish around the
Gulf and the Horn for about a year, complete with all the necessary
paperwork, and then ring someone up and say something like 'Hey man, like
we want our guns man, we're human too you know...' and await delivery and a
training package...

Now I'm sure if I can work this sort of thing out the highly paid
intelligence analysists of the CIA can as well, but it would be horribly
difficult to spot the dud company from the real one.

Freight shipping in smallish freighters has always been a pretty dirty
business.

The easy solution is not to allow merchant ships anything more lethal than a
rifle...

Better use a MARS (aka MLRS) - great for punching holes in lots of
pirate boats at once ;-)

Let's be real here...all you need is a Barrett 821A or 95. Shoot .50BMG,
long, long range. A good mount on your cabin top and most of the bad
boys will stay far far away.

Well, except maybe for some of the rec.boat idiots like Florida Jim,

Probably spot the dud company the same way Valerie Plame's op was
outed, not enough documentation and reaction. Call the telephone
number, several times, usually not answered or answered by an
answering service. Look for membership in shipping organizations,
address in "home" country, hiring patterns for crew, agents.

A Russian op would probably look real, a Russian-backed op probably as
well. It's called experience in the "legend".

It's been a few years since I've been in the Gulf of Mexico but to my

None around Texas at any rate.

Are you saying that happened in the Gulf of Mexico? I'm pretty sure
it was around Somalia.

True. If someone wants your boat there it's probably drug
runners.....they'll kill you anyway, so you might as well get in a few
shots.

So, you're like a convenience store clerk who carries a gun. If you
get robbed and shoot the robber, you lose your job but at least you're

Maybe that's the solution to this whole thing! :-)

They had a really good idea, a consultant service for an investment
company. Idea would be that they do some private work if you are an
okay company but their resources, ie Valerie Plame plus whoever else,
are limited and very expensive. My experience with CIA cover was that
the people who did it were very unimaginative.

The entertainment at graduation from a place with a reputation,
included a guy who was sort of a Shelly Berman type. He did a routine
on a stool with a telephone that went through all of the possibilities
of a trainee being nabbed by the local police for "suspicious
activity".
