This would avoid buying a "real" gun for defending ones sailboat
from pirates. Thoughts?

Modern pirates use RPG launchers. You have to match fire power.

So bring an RPG launcer yourself. Better yet, how about a MILAN or
Sagger anti-tank missile? You could *out*-gun them that way!

Can you adapt a Stinger missile or SAM-7 for surface-to-surface use?
You'd have even more range and flexibility that way.

"Hello, my name's 'Hamid the Mad Bomber', here's my skipper's ticket
and
a
letter from my shipping company, it's called 'The Terrorist Shipping
Line", saying that I work for them. I'll have 6 RPGs and a SAM-7 to go
please..."

I'm sure the company would have some serious hurdles.

------------------

What sort?

Small freighters are available for less than 'telephone number' money. I
found half a dozen in a web search that took less than ten minutes, all
for
less than a million dollars US

A limited company can be bought in the UK for £100 and its registered
address can be a sympathetic lawyer's office.

And then you've got an Arab owned British shipping company (ship
registered
in Liberia of course) that's doing business in the area and has a
perfect
right to the stuff.

Invent a couple of small trading companies and ship cheap rubbish around
the
Gulf and the Horn for about a year, complete with all the necessary
paperwork, and then ring someone up and say something like 'Hey man,
like
we want our guns man, we're human too you know...' and await delivery
and
a
training package...

Now I'm sure if I can work this sort of thing out the highly paid
intelligence analysists of the CIA can as well, but it would be horribly
difficult to spot the dud company from the real one.

Freight shipping in smallish freighters has always been a pretty dirty
business.

The easy solution is not to allow merchant ships anything more lethal
than
a
rifle...

Probably spot the dud company the same way Valerie Plame's op was
outed, not enough documentation and reaction. Call the telephone
number, several times, usually not answered or answered by an
answering service. Look for membership in shipping organizations,
address in "home" country, hiring patterns for crew, agents.

A Russian op would probably look real, a Russian-backed op probably as
well. It's called experience in the "legend".

--------------------------

The easy way to do it would be to set up a real shipping company and ship
some stuff, or 'adopt' one owned by a sympathiser.

That way you don't show up when people do basic background checks...

Terrorists don't operate in a vacuum.

I'm astonished that the CIA didn't actually operate a proper company
complete with proper offices for 'cover' purposes for its agents, except
that, of course, when it gets blown everyone gets blown...

Alaskans are used to getting a check for several thousand bucks every
year from oil companies. They are not shocked that Stevens got a
little mungo from a huge oil company project..

The issue wasn't the bribes, but that he didn't properly report them on
his federal forms. If there is any justice in Alaska, Ms. Palin is going
to find herself in similar hot water over the construction of her house,
though the charges against her will be state, not federal.

If every politician who got a favor from someone was removed they
would not be able to raise a quorum in any legislative body in the
country.

The advantage for Palin here is that in 4 years this will all be old
news. I still say this was just a way to clean out her closet with
very little to lose. The odds of a republican winning the white house
were slim this time, no matter who they ran. She may be the most
vetted politician in the country right now and in the grand scheme of
things, they didn't find much. The real question will be in how she
acts from now on.
If I was her I would get a better grasp on how the federal government
works. Some of her "the VP runs the Senate" lines were just dumb.
Nothing would do that better than a job at the capitol.

Perhaps she can run the shoeshine stand there.

The trooper investigation is over and will be forgotten next

I doubt anyone will care after Wednesday when the network slime
machine loses interest.
It is like Bill Clinton. Now that he is out of the (s)lime light,
nobody cares who he pulls his dick out in front of.
If Hillary had the nomination we would be hearing about everything
from the last girl he flashed to his whether Hillary and Chelsea
traveled on his Arkansas governor expense account. Nobody cares about
the loser.

The media is interested in Palin because she came out of nowhere and was
put on the McCain ticket without being vetted. It turns out that almost
none of the great claims made about Palin were true, and that she has a
number of, uh, ethical lapses. Those, and her utter lack of knowledge in
areas where she should have some has built interest in her
unpreparedness and incompetency in the area of civics.

This is all McCain's fault and is illustrative of his bad judgment. He
rolled the dice with Palin and came up craps. He is not to be trusted at

Kind of depends on what Palin does. If she's thinking 2012, she remains
in the limelight. If she just heads back to Alaska ... Who knows?

The media is interested in Palin because she came out of nowhere and was
put on the McCain ticket without being vetted. It turns out that almost
none of the great claims made about Palin were true, and that she has a
number of, uh, ethical lapses. Those, and her utter lack of knowledge in
areas where she should have some has built interest in her
unpreparedness and incompetency in the area of civics.

This is all McCain's fault and is illustrative of his bad judgment. He
rolled the dice with Palin and came up craps. He is not to be trusted at
the wheel of the ship of state.

I would suggest that some part of the RNC management put Palin in play
and that McCain is, at most, subject to bad advice. "Okay, give me a
name of someone the evangelicals will vote for"

It was McCain's call. Therefore it is McCain's fault. In the GOP, for
the moment, he calls the shots. Period.

Why did one of his handlers say from the first "McCain doesn't speak
for the campaign"?

I agree Palin was not ready for national politics but I don't think
there is much real meat in the things they have tried to pin on her.
I imagine a lot of governors have a tingle in their backside when they
see the level of scrutiny she has been exposed to tho.
I am a little jaded. I originally came from Maryland where Spiro Agnew
was the "reform" candidate. In the grand scheme of things the graft he
was convicted of was minor compared to his Baltimore peers. Md
politics may have been the most crooked in the country, perhaps even
eclipsing Chicago. Even after Agnew, my state senator (Mike Miller)
pretty much had a price list for what it cost to get minor felonies
dismissed. Everyone I knew had his number memorized (301 868 8888 as I
recall). He specialized in DUI, guns, dope and serious traffic like
"evading and eluding".

Just wait until they find out that Obama never attended Columbia.

Mounting evidence that he never went there. Nobody knows him,
remembers him from his law school or, and this is the best part, he
won't release his Columbia records. Probably because there ain't any.

She has four years to become the darling of the remains of the
Republican Party. The people whom Bush skivvied wanted to go back to
zero and rebuild over the next four or eight years. If Palin stays,
seeking the nomination, they have their Dole/McCain for 2012, a
plausible figure doomed to defeat but with ego enough to try for the
prize.

One is forced to assume that if she loses this time around they'll have her
delivered to an industrial strength polisher for six months. Followed by a
year or two touring the globe meeting the great and the good, will help a
couple of allied parties in major elections abroad and read a couple of
decent sets of political memoirs.

After all that she'll buy her clothes in Paris (she'll pretend they came
from Wallmart), be on familiar terms with half the (friendly) leaders of
the world and actually be fit for purpose.

She'll also learn to pretend that she's left her dafter ideas behind her,
at least until she gets elected...
