If she resigned as governor it would be to take Steven's seat if he
got reelected ... and the Marion Barry effect might let that happen

If Stevens doesn't quit before the upcoming election, it looks as if he
will lose. If somehow Palin appointed herself to that seat, she'd be a
really interesting and colorful senator, and would be about as effective
as Elizabeth Dole.

Actually he is still very popular and more then likely will be
reelected. His lifelong accomplishments have enriched Alaska. His
perfidy while corrupt and unacceptable has harmed no one. Alaska still
wants his seniority and political power.

Alaskans are used to getting a check for several thousand bucks every
year from oil companies. They are not shocked that Stevens got a
little mungo from a huge oil company project..

The issue wasn't the bribes, but that he didn't properly report them on
his federal forms. If there is any justice in Alaska, Ms. Palin is going
to find herself in similar hot water over the construction of her house,
though the charges against her will be state, not federal.

If every politician who got a favor from someone was removed they
would not be able to raise a quorum in any legislative body in the
country.

The advantage for Palin here is that in 4 years this will all be old
news. I still say this was just a way to clean out her closet with
very little to lose. The odds of a republican winning the white house
were slim this time, no matter who they ran. She may be the most
vetted politician in the country right now and in the grand scheme of
things, they didn't find much. The real question will be in how she
acts from now on.
If I was her I would get a better grasp on how the federal government
works. Some of her "the VP runs the Senate" lines were just dumb.
Nothing would do that better than a job at the capitol.

Perhaps she can run the shoeshine stand there.

You think Ms. Murkowski is going to stand aside for Sarah Palin? Why?
I doubt Palin would force a primary.

I think there will be a vacancy as soon asStevens' appeals are
exhausted

You're assumingStevenswill win re-election.

I hope everyone is aware that the juror who was dismissed from Stevens
jury because of a dead father experienced a miracle and the father
didn't die. Instead the juror went to a horse race. American justice.

Was the horse wearing lipstick?

Gosh, gosh, gosh...I hope the Republicans are dumb enough to run Palin
at the top of their ticket in 2012. She will be an unmitigated disaster.

She has four years to become the darling of the remains of the
Republican Party. The people whom Bush skivvied wanted to go back to
zero and rebuild over the next four or eight years. If Palin stays,
seeking the nomination, they have their Dole/McCain for 2012, a
plausible figure doomed to defeat but with ego enough to try for the
prize.

One is forced to assume that if she loses this time around they'll have her
delivered to an industrial strength polisher for six months. Followed by a
year or two touring the globe meeting the great and the good, will help a
couple of allied parties in major elections abroad and read a couple of
decent sets of political memoirs.

After all that she'll buy her clothes in Paris (she'll pretend they came
from Wallmart), be on familiar terms with half the (friendly) leaders of
the world and actually be fit for purpose.

She'll also learn to pretend that she's left her dafter ideas behind her,
at least until she gets elected...

I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Just think. She'll still be a young 48 year old.
You, assuming you're still kicking, will be gumming your oatmeal at what ...
about 70?

I'll still be young enough to appreciate the whole thing.
