Yes, I could prob write it off as a business expense but I wont do
that. My business could use the money for something else. However, I
may be misunderstanding this. As an S corp, would the truck be
company property or my own property (the company is mine totally).
I'd like to keep the separation for liability reasons. In reality, I
cannot justify my company having a truck although I could make a good
case to the IRS for it.

Funny thing about myths, the more you say them, the more people believe
them. The truth is, the economy does better under a Democratic
President, than a Republican one.

Easy for you to say. We didn't get a dime in last year's stimulus and I
suspect we'll be paying more no matter who gets into office. Someone has
to pay for Bush's insane war.

It has nothing to do with me. Seriously ... think about it. How is an

Certainly doesn't matter where it counts. Give me a break!

Most of the Obama voters have no realization of how little $1000 will
affect their lifestyle. But, if it'll put a new TV on the floor, it's well
worth a vote!

You can't go wrong with a Tundra, forget the Titan.

Yeah, I think my old Nissan bought for $11,000 in 1985 has done good,
time to go to the 4wd road in the sky.
I have read that the Tundra is better but have decided I cannot
justify a bigger truck even if it will haul the sailboat.

put her on the ww2 landing craft and take her to Dog Island where she
could RIP with all the other old trucks there. *I'd rig a chip to
randomely play Neil Young's "Long may You Run" while the vines and
dunes slowly drifted over her. *Maybe Nissan could make it a
commercial.

Sell it for scrap.............you may get some $750~$650 for it.

I figured we could put black bunting on the rusted old landing craft
and have a bagpipe playing a dirge as the old Nissan is pushed aboard
with an honor guard of modern 4X4s, It'd be a real hoot for
Carabelle. *Not gonna happen, would cost too much. *However oughta be
something I could do with such a faithful old truck.

Fix up a large blade made of I beam to a tree and ram it into the
radiator.

I have kept my two old trucks running far beyond reason with my old
1985 Nissan having 313,000 and the 1988 Dodge having somewhere between
180,000 and 200,000. This weekend, coming back from working on my
sailboat, I was seriously worried the Nissan would not get me home.
Not only is the transmission going bad, the center support bearing is
gone from the driveshaft, I cannot get her to go into reverse without
effort, now I seem to have a timing issue making her miss a lot and
lose power (maybe timing chain has slipped). No gages except the tach
and odometer work. One of the front drive axles has a torn boot (I
never use the 4wd so it does not matter). She would not pass
inspection anywhere else cuz the pollution control stuff long ago
rusted away.
Now the Dodge (the only vehicle I allow my 18 yr old son to drive) has
developed transmission probs. I simply cannot continue to repair so
many things because it takes all my time.
I loathe the idea of truck payments and comprehensive insurance but it
looks as if I'll have to just do it if I want to keep towing my boat.

Maybe I am too obsessive about having little debt but I always thought
of it as a freedom issue. With little debt I could do as I pleased.
Of course, having kids changed that some but still I have waaaaaay
less debt than most. It just seems WRONG to take on debt that ties me
down. My wife says "Dont worry about it, you'll keep this truck for
20 years too" but it is the near term debt idea that slays me. Saving
up to pay almost all cash would be difficult with so many kid expenses
and my wifes mouth surgery and so on and on, even the down payment is
tough when we want to keep a reasonable cash reserve just in case.
How do y'all justify debt on a vehicle to yourself?

I imagine it involves a lot of lying to ones self

Quite frankly, I am finding that I have little time to do any repairs
the past few years. Fortunately, my trucks are so old that I dont
have to do that much cuz all the stupid stuff like pollution canisters
long ago fell off. It is possible that I am old enough that I can
justify not lyin under a truck in the heat to replace a clutch. I
lalso know that I have waaaaay too many projects to spend much time on
repairs. Maybe I am just tired of doing it.
Here is a possible scheme: Buy a Titan or Tundra and then build a
trailer to allow me to occasionally haul the 7700 lb sailboat places.
Could I justify this with the Titan or Tundra costing about 1.4X the
gas all the time? The smaller Tacoma or Frontier would easily haul
the Tolman Skiff.
Y'all with larger trucks, how did you justify it?

I am having no problems with my F150. Other than I bought a year or two
early. If I had waited, could have gotten a good used one for a fraction of
the cost. But love how it drives. Would do a F250 or F350 if the boat is
really big. Even use the 4x4 in the winter.

Had a Nissan, sold it at 250,000 as rust. Had some problems with it when
new but was fixed by the dealer. Most Dodge owners seem to get a trany fix,
or in at least 3 of 4 I know that have RAMs have.

Not a big fan of GM since the car we had crapped it's transmission at 16,200
and had to argue with them for a proper fix and not a band-aid fix.

Justify it? Easy, I don't want more than one vehicle, but it must be a good
one. Most people overlook a vehicle depreciates+maintenance faster than the
fuel you feed it. So fuel mileage inside of reason isn't an issue.
Reliability and longevity is.

It must pull a 2500 to 3500 lb boat safely. And I don't want under powered
and under provisioned wandering all over the road going 30 mph up hill.
Safety is a must. F150 Lariat hauls it easy and safely.

Must be 4x4. I need to get to work even if their is 4-7" of white stuff.

V8, I like heat at -20F. And they run better too at low temperatures.

I justify it because it fits my needs, one vehicle does all and I like
driving it. Plan on keeping it a long time.

Overall, an automatic with a torque converter is much better for towing than
a manual with a clutch and is actually recommended for towing by most truck
manufacturers. This assumes you have a big enough truck for the job.

Also now have a collection of Leslie speakers .... two PR22 stationary
cabinets, a 122 rotary, a 760 rotary and a 825 rotary lower unit and 2101
upper rotary horn.

It is said that you should do what you enjoy in terms of a business. Now
that I have the time, I am going to try this. Music and the audio gear to

Anyway, I needed a heavier duty truck to haul this stuff around in an

Use the huge tax refund you'll be getting from McPalin.

Or the $1000 dollar tax decrease from Obama. Whoopie.

Yep, they do this in Canada. Cut you a cheque for a few bucks, whack you
good on taxes. Turns out they give you a $1 and take $100 more. Surprising
how many people get sucked into this and don't realize they just got stiffed
for $99.

Recent case in point, BC puts in a carbon tax that will net them about an
extra $150 year from everyone each and every year. To sell it they cut each
person a one time $100 cheque. 1/2 the people think this is great.

Beware of the leftist statist government types.

I wouldn't buy one, but I've seen a lot of seemingly really good deals on

original *B3, a C3 (which is a B3 in a different cabinet) and a "Porta-B".
Also now have a collection of Leslie speakers .... two PR22 stationary
cabinets, a 122 rotary, a 760 rotary and a 825 rotary lower unit and 2101

My brother once owned an electronics repair shop, and on the side
built custom sound equipment for bands. He was getting quite a
reputation and bigger bands were wanting his equipment. I think it got
to be too much for him. He always liked the simple life.

I visited the warehouse of a local equipment rental place yesterday. It's
where I bought the Hammond C3.
The company rents equipment for touring professional bands, wedding
receptions and private parties.

The owner gave me a tour through the huge facility. Hundreds of guitar amps
(big), hundreds of keyboards, PA equipment, synths, mixers, mics, four B3's
..... I couldn't believe the inventory. I asked him if his business level
supported the inventory of gear he had. He said he averages 150 major
equipment setups a MONTH! And that's just in about a 150 mile radius of
his business.
I couldn't believe it.

He had pictures in his office of him with clients, including Paul McCartney,
Roy Orbison, BB King, and many, many more.

Quite an interesting visit.

Last night talking to my wife about Nissan vs Toyota, she knows I like
Toyota and said "Buy what you really want and stop being so cheap". I
said "Well, my Nissan was pretty reliable" and she started laughing
saying "David, you thought your old 1955 Ford was reliable and it had
no windows". She may have a point about buying what you want.

"Buy what I want", hmmmmmm, the vehicle I TRULY lust after is a mid
'50s cabover dually. For some reason, I think those cabovers are
awesomely cool. An 8 cyl FLATHEAD engine. I have always wanted to
rebuild a flathead engine just because I admire the simplicity of
them. Put a modern electronic ignition it with HV plugs, radial tires
and you'd improve the previous miles/gallon a lot. She'd have towing
capacity. No comprehensive insurance costs. I could fix ANYTHING on
it. The best part of all would be no bizarre electronic crap like
power windows and such. I wonder if I could make one so reliable I
could drive it across the USA from FL to WY.

Wow, must be a lot of major productions that don't have their own
equipment. I think if a band rented equipment as opposed to renting,
setting up, then sound checks would be a bitch and a long process!

I like manual shift but is there any reason for them anymore? In the
very long run, I still think a manual shift will outlast an automatic
and I can replace a clutch.

If I were to trade in my 4Runner for a new one, I'd go back to manual, even
if I had to buy a different breed. I like being able to shift when I want
to. I don't like the auto dropping into another gear any time it starts
climbing a hill, while towing. Using the cruise control, with an automatic,
while towing is a waste. The damn thing is shifting continuously, so cruise
control can't be used.

Yup, manual is the way to go.

Easy for you to say. We didn't get a dime in last year's stimulus and I
suspect we'll be paying more no matter who gets into office. Someone has
to pay for Bush's insane war.

Should of filed an income tax return.

Our accountant finished up our return for '07 on October 14th .... a day
before the extensions run out. He does this every year for some reason,
even though our financial life has become much more simple since I stopped
working.

But, I was surprised that he said we will be getting a stimulus check. I
have no idea how much.

Does the 4Runner have a "tow/haul" mode?

Virtually all the US manufactured trucks have it, including even the little
Ranger I had.
The auto transmission in tow/haul mode will do a much better job of
selecting the proper gear for the load than a manual transmission. Plus,
you have the benefit of the torque converter which will unlock under load.
An added benefit, is that they change the gear shift points, reducing the
potential of lugging the engine and causing serious damage. Finally, they
also provide downshifts to provide engine braking while towing, saving your
brakes.

A properly equipped truck with an auto is much better .... in fact the tow
ratings are higher with an auto.

There is no 'tow/haul' mode that I know of. The book suggests towing in 4th
rather than overdrive. What I'm towing is not that heavy (3500lbs) that the
V8 shouldn't be able to pull it in overdrive on the interstate. It's not
like there are any mountains between here and Chesapeake Bay or Virginia
Beach.

I'm comparing this to my GMC, a manual, which seemed to tow better. Maybe I
should just leave it in 4th and forgetaboutit.

I couldn't agree more. I like watching manual tranny trucks trying to
get a boat moving up a big ramp and smelling the clutch burn unless
they have FWD and can shift the transfer case into FWD Low. My new
truck came with a tow package, including a bigger alternator, bigger
radiator, different rear end gearing, and the auto tranny is specific,
having a cooler and the tow/haul function.
