at modern prices is...stupid.

The BMW of beaters is, of course, a BMW. I bought a 57 Volvo for $100.
It had been painted flat black with a brush, and had a channel iron
front bumper. City busses backed down when they saw me coming. Good
cheap beaters are getting harder to find.

These days, a lot of beaters that would have been perfectly acceptable
transportation in the old days would never pass inspection in some days.
