Happens all the time, in all businesses, for all kinds of reasons. My son's
father-in-law worked all his life for the Boston Globe. Belonged to
whatever union applied. For obvious reasons, the print media is making
major cutbacks, just like I am sure ATT had to in order to stay in business.
The Globe offered very generous early retirement packages to those with many
years of service. His union decided to fight to the end, trying to get more
and he almost lost his job plus the package. Fortunately, some of us
talked some sense into his head and he accepted the day before the offer
expired. Now retired and enjoying life.

The secret is: Make yourself valuable and don't put all your eggs in one
basket.

BTW, I am not particularly anti-union. For some it's a good way to make up
for a lack of self-reliance, I guess. I just never had any need for the
safety net of a union, either to negotiate my pay and benefits or guarantee
my job. As a former business owner, we had many tradespeople, most of whom
were former union members at one point or another, who much preferred the
culture, benefits and working environment of our non-union shop.

i love when when right wing shills say this

so when ATT laid off 100,000 people, including some of the world's
best scientists....when TI laid off PhD scientists with degrees from
CalTech, and Princeton....those folks were failures, i suppose

your belief in corporate infalibility is quite touching. not since i
believed in santa claus have i seen such faith...

*I just never had any need for the
safety net of a union, either to negotiate my pay and benefits or guarantee
my job. *

tell it to the folks at enron who lost their jobs by corporate
malfeasance...or bear stearns, or countrywide financial. you have an
eqo probem that prevents you from seeing reality

IOW you're a republican.

as i said...the GOP has fostered an anti union attitude in this county
and you're living proof. you believe in a fairy tale. you think you
control your own future

wrong.

------------------------

Nope. I do control my own future, within the constraints imposed by laws,
taxes, etc.

IOW .... instead of constantly bitching about it ... I found ways to make it
work. It's not hard.

Indeed, work your ass off for an American corporation and then, when it
suits the corporation, it cuts your health care, dumps your retirement
and then ships your job off to China.

We obviously need to change the way the game is played.

This is comical. Another standard, preprogrammed liberal response.

My DIL is a hard core, ultra liberal, a product of her equally liberal
California mother.
It's lots of fun debating issues with her because her responses are so
predictable ... to the point that I will whisper her response to a statement
I am about to make to someone else, before I make it. She parrots back the
predicted response almost 100% of the time.

Then, I start teasing her by responding with her words .... a fraction of a
second *before* she utters them. She sounds like a slight time delay repeat
of what I say.

It's always the standard, liberal lines. "John McCain voted 90% with Bush
..... (doesn't matter that so did most of Congress from both sides). Or
"McCain is just another four years of Bush".

I wish sometimes that people representing the left would come up with some
original thoughts or lines instead of parroting the same stuff they hear in
the media, day after day, week after week, month after month. As Russia
reemerges as a world power, terrorists still run around threatening our
lives, the economy is in deep doo-doo ..... the Dems have us focused on
lipstick.
