It's so sad to see Tom leave.

There must be something we can do to keep this NG alive.

A strict filtering regimin to eliminate Krause and any one else who
exhibits similar behavior could work.

Would anyone like to share any ideas to fix this NG? We could conference
over at Chucks via PM if he will allow it. Or maybe we could do it via
email.

Start small...with yourself.

Bingo. Isn't it amazing how the Seven Little Schitts think themselves
blameless?

They take their lead from Colonel Kurtz (our own renegade army officer)

A strictly adhered to filter regiment might work, but many, including me,
get sucked back into discussions by quoted references. I am willing to try
to totally ignore, if that is the consensus.
My concern, in the case of Harry, is that if he runs out of people to insult
or listen to his politics, he would just crosspost in an attempt to
encourage and draw in new blood. Hell, he has already acknowledged that.

I've had him filtered for a couple of weeks but I still see his crap in
90% of the posts here. We have to do something to get rid of him or
there will never be peace here.
Well, one thing you can do is to remember to remove an offenders post
from your reply, then all that people will see is your post.
Yay!
Tim, are you willing to stop your discussions with Harry?
I'd rather not, but on political subjects?
Sure!
Ignoring means ignoring. But do your own thing.

Not necessairily. If it's boating related, why not talk to him in a
boating news group.
anything else?

Because harry has proven over the years that when he is ignored, he
will mix a little boating in with thinly veiled insults and shots just
to get things stirred up again. You might not have been here long
enough, but that is a definite pattern, look what he did to chuckies
place.. Trolling with etec stories, oversize pictures, and other
seemingly "boat" related posts that were actually targeted trolls to
Reggie, John, and Tom... Harry and salty need to be completely
ignored.

Ask Eisboch. When Chuckies place got started many of us left here
completely ignored harry, things went well for a while. Harry went
through his series of moves. Thunder posting, vulgarity, and
eventually found a subject or two that Dick would respond to and
sucked him back in, despite our pleas to him. He finally came to his
senses when he realized that harry was just shooting ducks and hoping
one would stick.. It is all a ruse to get someone sucked in so he can
start up again...

If you want to try to play his game, you can.. But there is nothing
there for you or anyone here that you can't get somewhere else... He
has one purpose, even with "Boating" posts, if you read between the
lines to the not so thinly veiled trolls....

Classy, classy, classy.

Loogy, how about engaging Harry at sci.military.naval, or one of his other

Your continuous responding to his trolls over here sure doesn't help
anything.

Maybe some time in the stockade, brig or whatever will help your men
straighten out and fly right.

Uh oh. That won't make Major Major Major Herring happy. I'm sure you'll
hear from him. You know how important it is to him for everyone to jump
when he issues orders.

Especially now that he's been promoted to Lt Colonel.
What rank did Marlon Brando hold in ''Apocalypse Now'....mmmmmmmm?

Misguided as he was, Colonel Kurtz was capable of abstract, even
philosophical thinking. Way too heavy a role for someone like Herring.

Unfortunately, just did the same thing a half hour ago.
The only way this will work is to remove all traces.

The only thing that will help this ng is if harry leaves... period. Another
option is for *everyone* to filter him out. If you don't see his posts, you
can't respond to him... it's that easy. However, some people feel the need
to "defend themselves" and as such will not filter him, so the cycle
continues. I see none of his political garbage... until someone resonds to
him. That sucks.

Try it, you'll like it. harry is a sick individual, and will not, or cannot,
stop. He needs help.

I don't see his posts, just the replies. You are right, there are very
few who care about what he has to say. They just have to ignore him and
he will go away or simply talk to himself.

Gene's algorithm obviously does not fix the problem. It is a great idea,
intended to eliminate OT, but it obviously has holes.

One of the historical issues is that "rec.boats" does not have a charter to
fall back upon as a reference for conformity of topic or conduct. It's the
original boating newsgroup and was started without benefit of a published
charter. There is an old "FAQ" list, but no official charter.

This is not to say that a charter guaranties civility or even helps, but
"rec.boats" lacks a reference for conduct.

The problem is not unique to rec.boats however. Virtually all of the
unmoderated NGs I've read suffer from the same problems prevalent here. It
seems like every one has it's own "Harry".

Eisboch

WAFA doesn't post through Gene's server (see the headers). It would
filter him into oblivion...
