It's the Gallup *tracking" poll, S.F.B., and it's been analyzed several
times in the recent past for its inaccuracies. Try looking at the state
by state polls for projected E.C. totals. Those E.C. totals are the
predictors.

It amazes me that you are a Republican with your health issues. If they
are as serious as I suspect, you are biting your nose to spite your face.

I doubt you have the intellect or education to understand this:

And on MSNBC this morning, Chuck Todd sounded off on the “likely voter”
results that Gallup reports in its "tracking poll":

“[Frank] Newport, editor of Gallup, a good pollster … even has a warning
in USA Today this morning that says don’t believe the likely voter,
follow the registered voter model. They report it anyway. … But the
point is, is that this is — a good polling organization like Gallup,
okay, these guys are in control of the gold standard of polling. They
can’t figure it out. I think this is a warning to everybody that polling
this year is very difficult. … Everything should be taken with a grain
of salt.”

Got that?

The national polls are very flaky at the moment, and have been for a
while. The state by state polls seem a lot more real.

The only important poll is conducted on the first Tuesday in Nov. but if
Obama had a lead in the polls, can you imagine who would be cut and
pasting the polling results on a daily basis?

I was really surprised with Bill's speech last night, he was as good as
he ever was. It really doesn't matter if you agree with Bill or not, he
was able to deliver a great speech. If he was half as good during
Billary's campaign as he was last night, she might have been the Dem's
candidate. He sure was out of it during her campaign. Talk about
sticking his foot in his mouth at every campaign stop.

The "national" polls are pretty much meaningless at this point. They
make for headlines on the cable news networks, but they fluctuate so
wildly from day to day that they really are next to meaningless.

Some of the state-by-state polls, though, are very interesting.

My original prediction stands...if Obama wins Virginia, then you can go
to bed, because the results are known...he won. If he loses Virginia,
we'll all have to stay up later. At the moment, Obama has about a 1
point lead there, well within the margin of error.

It looks to me as if the Dems accomplished what they wanted at the
convention, to come out of it unified and at least 98% behind Barack
Obama. Hillary was absolutely masterful, Bill was damned good, Biden was
good and will get much better as he adapts to his new speechwriters.
Interestingly, and probably because they want to appeal to independents,
the Dems did not engage in the sort of Karl Rovian personal attacks on
McCain that the McCain forces are trying to use again Obama. I did enjoy
the lines about how McCain has so much experience but no judgment. :)

I expect Obama to hit it out of the park tonight, and it is one hell of
a big park.

I wonder how many times next week the Republicans will tell us that
"John McCain was a prisoner of war." That must have been where he
decided he was against torture of prisoners, before he later decided he
was in favor of it.

When it is as close as these polls show, there is no way anyone can
predict the outcome, but Obama's trend is not a good sign for his
campaign. He will have to do something different to get his message out
to the independents or he will lose this election.

Why? It's traditional and appropriate at that moment- the end of the
speech at a convention - for the candidate's family to appear on stage.
Besides, Biden, especially, has a compelling family story, as I am sure
you know.

A poster repeatedly posting photos of little clone grandchildren in a
usenet boating discussion group or discussion board doesn't pass the
"who gives a ****" test. It's not the same as posting photos of a
handsome and clever dog. Dogs are always on topic.

I can almost "smell" the GOP convention next week...plenty of talk about
Jesus, an end to abortion, corporate entitlements, lies about how
drilling will end our energy crisis, lower taxes for the deserving
wealthy, "I was a POW for five years," and "he's an independent thinker"
but of course he isn't.

So...you're a Republican...what's your guess on the veep nom?

I know Harry would think anyone proud that his children could procreate
is stupid, but I think the way Biden handled the death of his wife, and
how great his children are doing, should be very proud of them and his
grandkids. I didn't know about Biden's wife dying soon after he was

You don't have to be "registered" to be a Republican or a Democrat. If
you vote mostly Republican, you are a Republican. You vote mostly
Republican, I am sure, especially for President.

I am a registered Democrat. I haven't read through a Democratic party
platform document in decades, probably not since 1970. I have no idea
what is in this year's "platform," and I couldn't care less. My father
in law is a lifelong registered Republican. I haven't asked him, but I
suspect he has never ever read a GOP party platform document.

So, what is your guess on the GOP veep?

I am surprised you are not upset about Biden showing off his
grandchildren.

Eisboch

Why? It's traditional and appropriate at that moment- the end of the
speech at a convention - for the candidate's family to appear on
stage. Besides, Biden, especially, has a compelling family story, as
I am sure you know.

So...you're a Republican...what's your guess on the veep nom?

Wrong, ballot-breath. I am a registered nothing, consider myself
an Independent, although certainly admit to right leaning tendencies
on most issues. In some areas though, I am probably as liberal as
you. gasp

I have a bit of a hang-up about the concept of being a "registered"
member of any political party. Doing so tends to make one accept and,
by default, support platform issues that one otherwise may not be in
agreement with. Lemmings. We saw that during the Dem's convention.
Compromises of principles by all for the "common good" of the party.
Past differences forgotten. Nope, not for me.

I vote for the person who I think will best serve the best interests
of the USA in national and international issues, not for the one who
will best forward a political party's agenda, developed through
political compromise and back room deals.

Eisboch

You don't have to be "registered" to be a Republican or a Democrat. If
you vote mostly Republican, you are a Republican. You vote mostly
Republican, I am sure, especially for President.

I am a registered Democrat. I haven't read through a Democratic party
platform document in decades, probably not since 1970. I have no idea
what is in this year's "platform," and I couldn't care less. My father
in law is a lifelong registered Republican. I haven't asked him, but I
suspect he has never ever read a GOP party platform document.

I think you completely missed the point that Eisboch was making.

One of Biden's sons was elected and serves as attorney general of
Delaware, and the other is a lawyer and member of the board of directors
of Amtrak. I don't know what Ashley Biden, the daughter of Joe's second
marriage does, but I am pretty sure she doesn't make obscene gestures
into the camera when it is pointed at her.

I wonder what Justwait's kids will do when they are older? Follow their
father's example?

I dunno, one of my kids is an accountant, the other works for a non-
profit which tends to the poor, mostly folks from other countries and
American Indians.. Oh, and travels the world, oh, and just finished
her Masters.... Yup, as a stay home dad, I am pretty proud of my
kids... even if they have fun here and there. They trust and love
their parents..

In this household, we never could figure why the Bush family passed over
the smart son and pushed the stupid one into the White House.

That would be funny, though...McCain and Bush, all over again.

I had been thinking it would be Romney...he's such a pretty boy attack
dog, he could well be the Dan McQuayle of the 21st Century. Then I was
hoping it would be Lieberman...naw.

Seriously, if it weren't for his name, Jeb might not be a bad pick.

In the past, I've voted both. I voted for Carter once and I voted for

Does that surprise you?

So, I don't consider myself a Republican or a Democrat. I simply vote for
one or the other, depending on my modest judgement of who will best serve
the national interests of the USA.

One of the attractive qualities of Obama .... in fact maybe the *only*
attractive quality .... is that a President Obama would probably be better
equipped to salvage and repair our image abroad at the moment. Not to be
pandering to forgein opinion, but in this day and age respect of the USA by
others is important to our national interests, economy and security. I
realize that and it's an important issue. Bush's policies, right or wrong,
have pretty much demolished any international respect.

On the other hand, Russia is flexing it's muscles again, taking full
advantage of our current weaknesses and lack of international support.
That also has me a bit concerned. I don't think academic diplomacy alone
will nip it.

The office of POTUS is more about leadership in a global environment than it
is about detailed social policies at home, IMO.
There are other bodies of elected representatives (Congress) that should be
doing their job.

As for McCain's VP pick? I really don't know. A couple of weeks ago I
was thinking it would be Romney for sure, but I have a hunch that we may be
in for a surprise.

Question then:

When you enter your voting booth, do you vote a straight Democratic ticket?

Or, do you pick and choose, voting for a Republican here and there if you
think the person running is better qualified.

Honest answer only, please.
