When a joke is spoken or written, it still creates a visual picture.
In this one I see the clown suit, big shoes, and maybe a leg sticking
out of the pot. The cannibals are black, wear loincloths, and have
bones in their noses.
The whole picture is "funny," including the punchline.

This whole issue came up at a meeting with my bud who is a Superior
Court justice and has been announced as Chief Justice when the current
Chief Justice retires.

He is a big time Jerry Garcia/Dead fan and I made a crack about
becoming the head judge. Get it? Head judge?

The conversation continued and after about two minutes, he said to me
- "Much too subtle to be funny - it's funny, but too subtle".

Which launched us into a discussion about perception (we wandered off
into the why's and how's of why people can recognize a chair, for
example, even if it's an extreme example of what a chair would look
like) and after haggling about that for a half hour, we came back
around to the nature of humor which prompted the question from me
about which cannibal joke was funnier.

He opts for #1.

I opt for #2. :)

If you are calling me an ass, or saying that my sense of humor is up my
ass, you are probably correct on both points. Still, Clowns are much
funnier.

By the way, can you imagine the first person who opened a claim or
oyster and said, ''mmmmmm I wonder what this tastes like".
