I arrived there by ship in 1959 and I can still remember the terrible odor
we started smelling shortly after the island was in sight.

The open sewerage in use at that time, like running right down the
streets,
was not a pretty sight and the stink, I'll leave that to your imagination.

I remember my first liberty off the base. A couple of us shared a cab
into
town and as soon as we arrived mother nature called, number two. I
walking
into a gas station where the WC (water closet) was located in an adjacent
building. I opened the door and there was a hole in floor for making a
deposit. For some reason I lost the urge.

Ah, the good ole days. Wouldn't trade them for all the tea in china.

The Koreans, in Seoul, were still using the hole in the floor in the late
70's. They had modernized though, there were little concrete pads with
shoe
impressions next to the hole, to keep one from slipping in, I suppose.

My last business trip to the Far East was in 1994. Many place still had the
hole in the floor facilities. But some had a "special" water closet for
"Westerners", a real commode.
