In fact it kept me out of the Marines. Army didn't mind, though. ========================= Between you, Dick, Tom, BAR and a couple of others I think we have all Armed Forces services present here. Thanks for serving. BTW: My son is having a blast on Okinawa. It's good he's getting it out of the way first rather than later. From what I've heard, it's a lot of fun when you are younger and fresh out of boot. Used to be being stationed on Okinawa was like being in the Pirate Navy with Pirate Marines. :) Or so I've been told. Don't know if it's the same way today. My brother was a spook in the Navy stationed on Okinawa. Hasn't walked correctly since. Eisboch |

My oldest boy was TDY at Kaneda for a couple of months after he first got out of Pensacola before his squadron moved to Korea - can't remember the name of the air base there. He enjoyed it. |

Eisboch- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - A trusted friend of mine was an army spook. had crypto clearance and all. Had been stationed in Hawaii, Japan, several places around the far east. CO was wondering what he was doing one night, he said "playing chess" "Who with? " "The Russians" "Where they at?" Oh, a sub, about 3 miles off shore" I was marveld at his candidness then he told me. "What are they going to do? They're about as bored as I was, so... we played chess! ..besides, they couldn't do anything to us that we couldn't do the them first....so? we played chess!" Rob and team were scrambling to recode computers when the Pueblo was captured. Like a patriotic spook, that's about all he'd ever say. |

My next door neighbor is a former boomer skipper and tells some great stories about Russian subs. My favorite was his story about being trailed by a Russian H/K sub and they had an accident on board that seriously injured a couple of their sailors. They guys on the boomer heard it when it happened and as the Russian sub surfaced, he offered assistance which to his complete surprise was accepted. When he surfaced, popped the hatch and got out, he was amazed to find four other subs all on the surface - one American, one British and two Russian subs plus the boomer. Everybody had been playing tag with everybody else. Anyway, the Russians were transferred to the boomer for treatment until they could be transferred to shore side hospital. |

When my brother, Special Forces, had completed two tours in Vietnam, they wouldn't let him go back for another because the policy at the time limited the tours to two. So they sent him to Okinawa. From there he would go back to Nam for 90 days TDY, and then back to Okie for a couple weeks. This pattern continued for another year or so. Wonder if they knew each other. |
