Spitzer to Step Down as N.Y. Governor
Embattled *Democrat* Apologizes for His 'Private Failings'
By Keith B. Richburg and Carrie Johnson
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, March 13, 2008; A01
NEW YORK, March 12 -- New York Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer, a rising
*Democratic* Party star who won election 16 months ago as a crusading
reformer against corruption, announced his resignation Wednesday after
being ensnared in a federal investigation that exposed his double life
as a longtime regular client of high-priced prostitutes.
With his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, at his side, Spitzer apologized for
what he said were "my private failings" and said he is stepping down so
as not to "disrupt the people's work." He said the resignation will take
effect Monday, to give his successor, Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson, time
to make a smooth transition.

It's fair when the person reading it sees what he wants to see. In this

The Hartford Courant also identified Spitzer's political party in
several of its articles, as did The Associated Press articles, which
many papers carry. Your Journal Inquirer on the 10th carried an article
by Amy Westfeldt, an AP reporter, that mentioned Spitzer's political party.

==================

Crazy idea: Write to the paper and ask why they don't include the word
"Democrat" in articles about Spitzer. You're guessing the reasons. I suspect
they assume (correctly) that smart people already know Spitzer's party
affiliation, and smart people (who have a life) realize it doesn't matter at
all. But, you could find out for sure.

A search for "spitzer" turned up 5 results. The first two articles identify
him as a Democrat. The other three do not. This may prove my theory: The
newspaper assumes that unless you're living in a cave, you know by now that
Spitzer's a Democrat.

When I was studying journalism, we were taught to make sure every word we
wrote served the one and only goal: To tell the story.

If you live in New England, you would have to be pretty ignorant of
your surroundings not to know who Elliot Spitzer is. Add to that the
fact that the stories you are looking at are filed from NEW YORK,
where it would be pretty silly to mention that Spitzer is a democrat
every time his name is printed. How often do they put the word
Republican after the name of Jodie Rell, Governor of Connecticut? I
think you'll find that they occasionally mention it when it is
actually pertinent to the story, and pretty much never as part of a
headline or lead paragraph unless it's a story about the republican
party position on something.

Yep. Like this:

"But while the Republican governor limited most of her proposed new spending
to a few criminal justice initiatives, majority Democrats in the legislature
say they want to do a few things Rell did not."

That's an example of the word serving a useful purpose, rather than
justifying some attitude the reader needs to hang onto.

Americans deserve better than that kind of double standard.
I still say he will be back, stronger than ever.. you watch.
Just keeping count, you have the Chicago paper, ABC news, Journal
Inquirer (our local DNC ragsheet).
Anyone else have any expamples of local news outlest protecting
the
DNC on this one to add to this list? Check your papers folks, bet
they
are doing the same. Some are even worse, trying in a clever way
to
associate the GOP with Spitzer for those around the country that
do
not know what party Spitzer was, it is quite a scam...
The idea that there is any collusion among newspapers is just
plain
laughable. Not much different than suggesting that all the drivers
in
the Indy 500 get together ahead of time and decide who is going to
win.- Hide quoted text -

Spitzer to Step Down as N.Y. Governor
Embattled *Democrat* Apologizes for His 'Private Failings'

By Keith B. Richburg and Carrie Johnson
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, March 13, 2008; A01

NEW YORK, March 12 -- New York Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer, a rising
*Democratic* Party star who won election 16 months ago as a
crusading
reformer against corruption, announced his resignation Wednesday
after
being ensnared in a federal investigation that exposed his double
life
as a longtime regular client of high-priced prostitutes.

With his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, at his side, Spitzer apologized
for
what he said were "my private failings" and said he is stepping down
so
as not to "disrupt the people's work." He said the resignation will
take
effect Monday, to give his successor, Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson,
time
to make a smooth transition.

Good, I will add it to the list, so far we are 3-1... Thanks, and
BTW,
like I said before, Rush bores me, I don't listen to talk radio..

But....doesn't the mother ship claim that the Washington Post is not

The Washington Post is not fair and balanced by anyone's standards
except
Harry's.

It's fair when the person reading it sees what he wants to see. In this
case, it made JWFM happy because it associated Spitzer with the word
"Democratic". Tomorrow, it may not please him as much.- Hide quoted

My paper is the Journal Inquirer... Hartford CT area.. And you are
lieing again, I never said I was happy, I just noted it.. period..
stop putting words in my mouth. You and Harrry seem to be pretty good
at that.

And I'd be willing to bet that it was way down in the story. If the
newshole is small, they cut from the bottom. Newspaper reporters are
taught to write their stories with the most important information
early, and the filler afterwards in case of the very likely event that
it needs to be shortened without harming the overall meaning. In the
days of actual "paste up" this sort of chopping from the bottom to
make things fit was usually done "on the fly" by the compositors
pasting up the pages, not actual editors in the newsroom.- Hide quoted text -

You must mean the "overall meaning" of leaving all the felony charges
out, to make room for the account of how his wife must feel? Pfffftt..

Yeah salty, guess I am just ignorant, as is my wife, and my dad, and
the list goes on.... Or how do you psudo-intellectuals put it,
"uninformed"? I guess I should know all the political affiliation of
all the governors around here as being from New York, he must be a
dem, that goes without saying.. oh wait, can you say Bloomberg?

======================

Here's another way to look at it: Why do you think his party affiliation
even matters, compared to all the other facts surrounding the story?

===========================

Depends on what day you're referring to. If it's today's story, the correct
assumption is that you've already seen all the information about felony
charges since the story began. If you haven't, you should know where to find
it.

Also, the newspaper you've been ordered to dislike often puts related story
links in a sidebar, so you can explore further. Example:
