Even worse - they get full benefits until they find a job comparable to what they were doing when they were laid off. It's astounding what the UAW has done to this country and when the definitive history of the Labor Movement is finally written, the UAW will be high on the list of causes of economic collapse of the auto industry. |

Hairy, you have so many endearing qualities we really wouldn't know where to start the list. I worked a few "crap jobs" in my youth and I sort of recall the pay being less than $60 to 70K, and we didn't run around screaming for "equity" or claiming to be skilled labor. I live on a fairly narrow city street with sidewalks and parking on both sides. We have seniors roaming around with walkers/rollators, dog walkers, young people etc passing by on a regular basis. My towing needs are very light but I need a shorter vehicle for maneuverability and superior all around visibility for regular use. My next vehicle (March 2009) will probably be the Toyota Rav4 with the 4 cylinder auto. I can always get a light utility trailer for hauling bulky stuff. Then again, if I move to a bigger boat...I may get the 6 cyl. Did you run that by your son? Run this, Dingy Boy. Blood pressure a little high today, Donnie? |

All we ever heard growing up was how important an education was for obtaining a decent job when we grew up as an inducement to work hard in school. Now it seems that everyone expects and is entitled to a good job regardless of how they applied themselves in school. We should focus more on making sure that people less fortunate have the opportunity for an education, not a guarantied, high paying job. It then remains an individual choice, not a social program. The blame lies with 1) the consumer, who is brain dead regarding economic issues, 2) predation by the US Government with respect to trade agreements, and 3) the automotive companies for failing to perform in the same manner as the Asian automakers. The US automotive companies need to get out of the US, ship raw materials, components, machine tools and capital equipment from lower cost counties, and assemble the pieces in KY, AL, etc. like the Asian brands. Who needs a middle class anyway? What the US automotive manufacturers produce are what the market demands - every company does that, without exception. What the US manufacturers CANNOT do is produce miniscule scooters and sell them for $10,000.00, for the reasons explained in #3 above. |
