Can anyone help me block these MI5 messages. I've tried using
M***5
as a subject line filter in Outlook Express (filtering the root newsgroup
directory), but it doesn't do the job.

Change your mail and news client to Mozilla Thunderbird. It's a much
better client and it has filters that are easy to configure.

A newsreader, like Forte' Agent, will make using newsgroups much easier.
You might consider giving it a shot.

Get a real news reader and dump Outlook Express for news. In fact,
you'd be well served to dump Outlook and/or Outlook Express even for
mail.

In fact, house of you out there using Google Groups should make a new
year's resolution to start using a standards compliant news
reader.....

It's hard to dump Outlook if the company you work for is large and has
it integrated into its IT functions and services. But not using Outlook
Express is the way to go. It's just awful.

Because the spammer frequently puts spaces or other characters between
those characters to get around your filter.

If you filter "MI5", your filter will miss "MI 5", M I5, M I 5, M15,
etc.

A quick look at OE's help system gives no indication that wildcards are
supposed to work. I wonder if it's an undocumented feature, or the OP is
trying a trick he learned for a different program.

Used to be that wildcards allowed for a non-specific range of input.

I'm not really sure they were even intended to delete "spam".

Interesting factoid: I was visiting my good friend down at Foskett

one of my snow blowers (older machine - no heat shield) and as of the

There was a paperback published some years ago that certainly would
interest Tom if not others. It was a book of roadkill recipes. These
were recipes you could use to heat up on the radiator of your car while
you are driving.

Now, there are other roadkill recipes around, but these were for meals
you could prepare while you travel. On your car engine.

Two main reasons, I can see. The internet is based on open standards
defined in RFCs. Outlook Express is not standard compliant. The second
is HTML. HTML was never meant to be used for email, and it's the vector
for many virii, web-bugs, spammers and other malware. Never mind the
internal bugs still around after 10+ years in service.

And yet, many people use it for years with no problems whatsoever. Me, for
instance. I wonder if it's wrong to place all the blame for problems on just
one program, when in fact, many users have no clue about protecting their
computers, so OE or not, they're going to experience problems.

interest Tom if not others. It was a book of roadkill recipes. These
were recipes you could use to heat up on the radiator of your car while
you are driving.

Now, there are other roadkill recipes around, but these were for meals
you could prepare while you travel. On your car engine.

Yeah anyway...back to the subject. Why is Outlook Express awful?

Just type "outlook express problems" into your web browser and have fun.

I haven't had a single problem with OE since I began using it several years
ago for email & news. I want to know what YOU have PERSONALLY WITNESSED.

Outlook vi-rii and Outlook troublefiles that little twerps around the
world create just for fun.

The internet is the main source of malware these days. It would only
seem prudent that programs that interface with the internet, email
clients and browsers say, should be as secure as possible. Adding HTML
capabilities to an email client just seems stupid to me. Does anyone
besides spammers use HTML email?

Yeah, but that makes perfect sense. Not a vacuum cleaner, though.

I personally witnessed Jesus restoring the hymens of prostitutes at The
Fuzzy Bunny Ranch out in Nevada.

Posts like that will earn you a lot of respect, Harry.

No snow here yet... :}

I wish there wasn't any snow.

Interesting factoid: I was visiting my good friend down at Foskett
Equipment this morning on an issue I'm having with a carb icing up on
one of my snow blowers (older machine - no heat shield) and as of the
last snow storm, he had 47 brand new snow blowers in his shop.

As of this morning, zip - nada - zero.

Sold all 47 in three days.

Since you are semi snowbound, now is the time to build that fishing rod.

....and suffer the denigrating of same when it's finished.

Does that depend on how you define HTML email? For instance, I get email
from Barnes & Noble, with pictures, and various parts of the pictures
contain links to different web pages. Is that HTML mail? If so, there are
plenty of non-spam uses for it.

But not using Outlook

Why is it awful?

Besides being virus prone.....

Does Agent handle tasks & day planning? I'm wondering because I thought
it
was just a news & email client. If that's the case, I must question why
you
posted the links above. How can you compare the two programs by pointing
out
certain features which one of the programs doesn't even have? That's
like
saying a vacuum cleaner does a lousy job of toasting bagels, so you're
going
to shop for a better vacuum cleaner.

Well, are we talking news reader or email client.

Thus far, I haven't seen a combination program I am happy with.
Outlook and Outlook Express try to be a vacuum cleaner and bagel
toaster and do a poor job of both.

Poor job HOW??? In what way? Be specific about OE in particular.

Ok.... I'm not sure how I can explain all of this. If you've never
been in a luxury car, you're probably going to stick up for the Yugo
because it is better than walking.

In general the Outlook(s) lack:

adaptable filtering
message templates
prevention of accidental deletion (parking)
(strong) encryption
macro capability

Accidental deletion of what? Email messages?

There are more things that I could add and you might respond that
Outlook has that.... but unless you see what *can* be done, you won't
know what I mean.

The Bat! is try-before-you-buy. Download it and try it... see what a
*full featured* email client offers. It has a learning curve... no
doubt.... but it offers a lot more than Outlook.... for me, its
organization capabilities initially sold me.

On the other hand.... if you are just looking for something that can
download the mail and down mind the exposure to viruses.... Outlook
might just be fine for you. Most software is good or sucks in the
eyes and demands of the user.... I want more than Outlook has to
offer.... and I don't want exposure to the host of security
vulnerabilities that Micro$oft has.

You can always tell when someone is really an expert. "Virii" is not
only not an English word, it's not a Latin word either.

The plural of virus in English is viruses.

As far as I know, virii is Martian for "potato salad".

I have been unable to find any other references from reputable
sources, or should I say, "sourcii"?

D'oh.

Gee.

Whiz.

No.

Fun.

Allowed.

Virii is a fun word, dumbo.

Some would argue Barnes & Noble is spam. Hey, I like the book store, but
I don't like their web bugs.
