The heir to my fortune and empire is apparently enamored of these toys.
Interested in feedback if you've got something like this. I think it's a
mistake and that a guy should have an actual stereo system, even if this
means getting rid of his roommate to make space in the dorm room. The prince
doesn't agree.

My DIL has the iHome clock radio from Circuit City. It sounds really
nice, has some pretty cool features. I'll bet he'll like it alot.

OK....I saw some other good reviews for that one. I'm also looking at an
Altec Lansing unit that's supposedly has better bass response than the
iHome, based on just one iHome review in which the user bemoaned the lack of
bass. He could've been deaf, though.

FWIW, most of us near deaf people suffer from high frequency loss, which
means most music sounds like it has too much bass, 'cause we can't hear the
treble.

In my opinion, having only heard the thing for an hour or so, seems
the bass is not bad. It isn't the earth shaking amplified crap you
hear coming from cars with a trunk full of amps and speakers, with the
windows rattling! What I really like about it is there's a lot of
simple pleasures, like the ability to use the alarm function with a
certain song on the playlist, etc.

The 'kids' are hoked on the iPods or reasonable facimilie.
No point fighting it.
My son has had one for a couple of years , and asked for a new model this
Christmas. Of course his mom ran right out and plopped down $400.00 + taxes
for it.
It was a lot cheaper back in the days of the old 45s.

If we eliminate HD radio from the discussion for the moment, an iPod is
probably no worse than listening to FM radio, which munges up the music to
an extent. My son's at least using music files pulled directly from CDs for
the most part, without any compression that he's applied. So, at least he's
not at the mercy of radio stations. But then, he's listening with earbuds,
which suck, according to my ears. I offered to get him a set of nice
Sennheiser 400-series open air headphones, but he's not interested.

He's always right, ya know?

Some don't care, especially if they have to pay for it. Of my seven,
only one has an Ipod. She paid for it after she found her whining
about how she just "had" to have it meant just that.
Wife was bugging me about buying one son an MP3 player.
I looked around on the net and couldn't make heads or tails about
what to buy. Finally told her to shut up, give him a hundred bucks
and let him buy it himself, since he would know what he wanted.
A couple days later we found he already had what he wanted.
A 1 gig thing he got from Newegg for $12.95. Doubles as a thumb
drive, plugs into his car stereo, blah, blah.

My son has had one for a couple of years , and asked for a new model this

They're shooting themselves in the foot by doing that. In interviews, lots
of musicians complain that they go to the trouble to create albums, not just
individual songs. Some kids never get to hear the albums. And, they never
see liner notes, which can lead to new musical discoveries. Buy an album,
and find that maybe it's got Victor Wooten on bass. Buy a Victor Wooten
album, and discover a drummer you like. Buy his album, and find a guitarist
you never heard of. Pretty soon, you're broke, but you have lots of great
music.

Whatcha gonna do?
I'll be sure to tell my kids what you said, and they'll probably say
they can find the liner notes on the web if they're interested.
Or that they don't care about liner notes.

Yeah, but that's a different issue. I'm all for artists getting paid
for their work. It's not just kids who think anything digital should
be free. I worked with a guy - highly paid, outwardly high morals -

If he was using Kazaa, chances are good that he paid even when he didn't

Exactly! I like having the liner notes from CD's. I'm sometimes amazed
at who has played on certain songs with the lead artist, who produced,
etc.

I did a clean reformat/reinstall for the parents of a friend of my son's.
The computer was trashed by spyware. A week later, trashed again. Fixed it
again, but this time, I got paid for the work, with $100 worth of tools from
the father's Snap-On truck. You'd think that would've made the parents more
vigilant. Nope. The computer was phuqued again about a month later. Their
solution: Buy a new computer. Duh.

While I don't really like Bose at all for larger sound systems, no one
does the small system sounding big better than Bose. A friend of mine
has this:

http://www.bose.com/controller?event...ltimedia_index

and it's pretty amazing. Yes it's pricey, but if you hear one you'll
pay the extra $100 or whatever the street price difference is between
the bose and the rest.

Not sure about that. Most of the music kids have is pirated stuff.

Pretty soon, you're broke, but you have lots of great
music.

Who cares really now. Like I tell my kids, if it was written after
say, 76, I don't care anyway;)

Whatcha gonna do?
I'll be sure to tell my kids what you said, and they'll probably say
they can find the liner notes on the web if they're interested.
Or that they don't care about liner notes.
You musicians have to look out for yourself and get people arrested
and tossed in jail for stealing music. It's a dog eat dog digital
world.

Actually, if you read past the headlines, you'll find that the majority of
musicians are not pleased with the legal nonsense perpetrated by the big
record labels.

And the price fixing on albums. Seems as if they are all about 19.99
minimum to $30+ these days. Costs about 25 cents to produce a CD with liner
notes and jewell case. Maybe the artists should do some realistic pricing
on their work. But then they could not live in the $20,000,000 house and
pay for all the attorneys they need for the jams they get into.

I remember Brubeck playing a performance at my high school. He grew up not
far from my home town. Loved his music then and still do. Best live
performance or at least in the top five in Brubeck at Carnegie Hall with Joe
Morello's solo still the best drum solo I think ever played. I grew up in
El Cerrito, which at one time, 1940's and 1950's had more jazz and music
clubs than just about any venue in the West at least. Kona Club, Six
Belles, It Club (also a strip joint), first strippers I ever saw and I was
about 10 years old. Family friends owned the clubs. They had to wear
pasties in those days. Counter rotation too. So we got lots of good groups
performing at our high school as they were on the rise.

I heard him play at Carnegie Hall back in the early 70s. He lives in
south Florida now, not too far from where we are. He still drops in
and plays at a local jazz place on Sanibel Island once in a while.

I'd suggest appropriate fenders, and and adequate number of suitable

Without any compression? Are you sure about that. Cause the lossless
formats only achieve about a 70% reduction in file size so you get around 2
cds or so per gig. Default ripping with itunes uses the apple acc
compression which is a lossy algorythm. Mp3 is also lossy.

If we eliminate HD radio from the discussion for the moment, an iPod is
probably no worse than listening to FM radio, which munges up the music to
an extent. My son's at least using music files pulled directly from CDs
for the most part, without any compression that he's applied. So, at least
he's not at the mercy of radio stations. But then, he's listening with
earbuds, which suck, according to my ears. I offered to get him a set of

Still lossy. I haven't found anyone that could really tell the difference
though. The problem comes in when you want to switch formats from one lossy
to another lossy. That's why it's always better to go back to the original
uncompressed source. Also why I very seldom buy music off itunes, because
then you never get a copy of the uncompressed song.

At the "better settings", it's difficult to tell the difference. And,
whether it matters or not often depends on the purpose of the file you're
creating. If I need to send a song to a band member, to settle the "Are we
talking about the same song here?" question, and he's one of these people
whose email is always close to fill, I'll shrink a 15mb song down to 1mb. It
sounds hideous, but at least I get the answer I'm looking for.

If I have to listen to that same song on my stereo every day for a week,
while learning it, then it has to be the original or very close to it.
Otherwise, it grates on my nerves.

I recently set up a music system using a pair of SL3 Martin-Logan's that
have been stored away since we moved into this house because I didn't have a
good room to set them up properly in. I decided to do the surround thing as
well and bought a new Denon receiver/amp, some Mirage surrounds and, believe
it or not, a decent sounding Bose center channel speaker.

Immediately ran into the problem I discovered the last time I used these
speakers. Many of the CDs that sound ok on a couple of other systems we
have using conventional speaker drivers sound terrible on the
electrostatics. But, the "good" ones sound spectacular, showing off the
acoustically transparent nature of this type of speaker.

Then, to my surprise, I found a royalty free, MP3 version Sousa's "Stars
and Stripes Forever" somewhere on the 'net. It was reported to be a high
quality file, recorded at a higher than normal bit rate, (don't remember
what it was). Anyway, I burned it to a CD and it sounds excellent. Lots
of dynamic range and you can clearly hear every instrument being played.
In terms of fidelity, it's better than half the commercially produced CDs I
have.

Ok, so what settings are you considering close to the original? And what
equipment do you run it through?

I'm using just 256kb mp4 and running it through a dbx223 crossover set at
700hz driving an adcom 555 amp for the woofers and an adcom 535 amp for the
midbass and ribbon tweeters. And I can't really tell any difference between
the uncompressed and the mp4.
