I remember Brubeck playing a performance at my high school. He grew up not
far from my home town. Loved his music then and still do. Best live
performance or at least in the top five in Brubeck at Carnegie Hall with Joe
Morello's solo still the best drum solo I think ever played. I grew up in
El Cerrito, which at one time, 1940's and 1950's had more jazz and music
clubs than just about any venue in the West at least. Kona Club, Six
Belles, It Club (also a strip joint), first strippers I ever saw and I was
about 10 years old. Family friends owned the clubs. They had to wear
pasties in those days. Counter rotation too. So we got lots of good groups
performing at our high school as they were on the rise.
