BTW, did your Vista come with a new computer or did you buy it outright
and if so, for what reason.

1. No.
2. Yes.
3. Because I wanted to buy it.

Every two years or so I assemble a new desktop computer from what I
believe to be the best or fastest or both components generally
available. The vendor from whom I bought the ASUS motherboard had some
good prices on VISTA OEM, so I asked him to tuck in a copy. So, not only
did I buy a copy of VISTA, I bought it from an OEM supplier sans OS
technical support.

The few issues I have had with VISTA have been minor and easy to
resolve. All of my software but one program works just fine on VISTA,
and when I connected up everything, it found all my hardware and
installed all the necessary drives, but for one, and that issue was
easily resolved.

I run this desktop on the bleeding edge. It is full of beta and even
some alpha software, and it has been rock steady.

It is kind of humorous that my actual experience with VISTA has been
relatively trouble-free and a good learning experience while so many of
you are the wimps I suspected you were.

But, then, I'm just an English major.

Pushing the envelope of a word processor is hardly exercising a
computer's capabilities.

I hate it. Its slow, locks up and does things I don't like.
An OS shouldn't do that.

I just want to run applications as fast as possible. Thats all.
I wouldn't install this bloatware on my work machines unless I
wanted to loose my job and was looking for a way out.

I bought Vista, my stoopid, I know.

VISTA isn't slow if you are running the right processor and an
appropriate amount of memory for the applications you use.

Bet you're not.

Use that same processor and memory setup and XP will still run faster.
Running a warp speed processor to get the same performance as an XP
machine running a supersonic speed CPU is just masking problems.

Sorry; can't run the "same" memory setup on XP. That should give you a
hint, eh? I've been waiting patiently here for someone to bring up
something, anything, and you've come the closest, even though you still
didn't get it. :}

Depending the processor, you can run up to 64 gb of memory. Does Vista
require even more?

XP doesn't recognize 64 gigs of memory.

Try that with XP.
Plus, even though VISTA 64 is way ahead of its time right now, there are
some great new apps coming that will take advantage of it. As soon as
some start appearing, my current desktop will become a server and I'll
build a new 64-bit box.

What apps you use should always drive the OS decision.
And *most* new software will be developed with Vista in mind.
XP will be good for many more years for most people,
but if I was buying a PC/Laptop with 64 bit processor, I'd chose
Vista as the "free" OS to bundle in.
At some point XP will have too many drawbacks, and you'll be more or
less compelled to go to Vista anyway.

Of course dual boot is still an option but you have to do Vista first.

Despite underwhelming consumers and being snubbed by
enterprises,
Windows Vista's numbers keep growing, with Microsoft Corp.
saying
Thursday that it has now shipped *88 million copies* of the
operating
system, almost double the number of copies of XP in the same
amount of
time at its launch.
The 88 million figure mostly includes Vista-installed PCs bought
by
consumers and small businesses,
JimH purchased Vista thinking it was great and the first thing he
wanted
to do is figure out a way to tweak it so it wouldn't run so slow.
It
just goes to show you PT Barnum was correct.
Hey dummy, I did not purchase Vista. I purchased a laptop with
Vista
for
my son.

BTW: Why are you so concerned about what decisions other people
make?
What business is it of yours Jim Gallow, I mean Reggie? You are a
regular
busybody.

Jimh, if you don't want comments about the decisions you make, why
do
you
continue to tell us all your decisions?
If you recall John, my question on Vista was to Harry. The dumb and
dumber
twins then got into the picture and the thread went downhill from
there.

What other "decisions" have I told you about and asked you to comment
on
John.

Gosh, maybe you didn't know that you could email Harry if you want
something to be just between the two of you.

This is what shows up in the header, but it may be a fake. Although, I
don't think Harry would do that because he frowns on it.

That's right. That email address works just fine. I don't check it
often, but it does work.
That will save a lot of confusion and acrimony. Jimh can just tell you
his
decisions about everything without getting comments from any others in
the
group.

Thanks.

Like your annual postings of your Mickey Mouse cruises? Then we have the
long discussions of your motorcycle, camera, boat purchase, etc. We also
need to include your posts here about your *contributions*, like the
laptop
you said you purchased as a high school graduation gift for your nephews
friends daughter?

What is that saying about people in glass houses? Eh?

The difference, Jimh, is that I don't go ballistic if someone offers
advice
or comments on my posts.

Neither do I John.

Pot-kettle-black?

The laptop was for my niece's graduation. That was stated simply. The
truck
went to the nephew.

Got it?

Yeah sure. Whatever floats your boat.

JimH,
I suggest you read your post for the past day. You may find you are
incorrect about not going off the deep end.

Why don't you take a Mickey Mouse 'around the world' cruise. It might do
you good.

What's ragging, Don?

You should have paid more attention to your high school students.

Memory is cheap. Find out what you have in there and add another stick or
two so you have 2 gigs. Were you aware that VISTA with the proper amount
of member does a better job handling several open apps simultaneously?

I can run Adobe Bridge CS3 and Photoshop CS3, working on photos, and at

My son's laptop has 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm memory and the processor is AMD
Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (2.0GHz/1MB).

I posed the question of the concerns posted here in a computer forum. Here
is one of the responses I received from what I would judge to be one of the
experts in the forum on computers

I had a new desktop built in February loaded with Vista. It's wonderful and
I am delighted with it.
-----------------------------------
Every time MS brings out new software the prophets of doom and gloom come
out of their comfort zone and start whining. The people who condemn Vista
today are the same people who tomorrow will enjoy Vista and will have
forgotten their reluctance to change. It's no different to the same
arguments made when changing from Windows 95 to 98 and then to XP all over
again.

The main protagonists seem to be conservative and frugal home and small
business users who cannot easily afford the hardware required and large
commercial organizations where such a major change would eat into their mega
profits.

Take no notice and enjoy it.
--------------------------------------------------

Do you see the same trend Harry? Precious! ;-)

Wouldn't it be better to send Harry an email?

In any case, I'm sure your son is thrilled with his laptop. That was a most
generous thing to do. I think he'd have been happier with an Intel
processor though.

BTW, on what do you base a judgement of someone's computer knowledge in a
forum?
