Well I am finally recovered from the other night. Stayed out till
about 2 am caught a great incoming tide and its pass. There was little
wind, no traffic to speak of, and the water was like glass. Hit the
water about 6 pm with all my toys and my dog. I like anchor fishing
with my little guitar, some beers, and the other night, a little 2"
color sony TV, I usually keep it for weather updates but that night,
there was football on broadcast tv locally. The evening started slow
and after a drift I got on to a nice bluefish. Dragged him on board,
24 inches, 7-8 lbs?? Decided to move down river to my secret spot
(that I tell everyone) and settle in.

It always happens and tonight is was just funny, After a while I was
standing in the boat and decided to fix a wedgie As soon as I
unbuckeled my belt and started putting in my shirt, zzzziiiiiiiiipppp,
there went the line. I hooked up and started reeling, a few minutes
later I am standing there with a frekin' shark and my pants around my
ankles. This was a pretty big shark as sandsharks go, he measured in
at 42". I got a little bad video to post later. A little while later,
another shark, almost the same size but not the same one as I tore the
other ones mouth pretty good taking out the hook, I hoped sharks were
not going to ruin my night, and thought about leaving. Just about then
zzziiiiiiipppp again, another bluefish, this was turning out to be a
pretty good night. All togther I probably got 7 blues and two sharks
and the water was just perfect. Got my last fish about 1 am and called
it a trip. I do hate living way up here inland, almost an hour to get
to the water, if I was back home I would be fishing every evening, I
do miss it. Anyway, a couple of cups of coffee in middletown and home.

Cleand the fish yesterday and did not notice while at the water but
one of the fish I kept for a neighbor was a big one. Measured in at 36
inches clean and 13.5 pounds. I did not remember it being that big
when I pulled it in. My arms and lower back still hurt from the trip,
I love it... Happy fishin' guys.

What do you do with the blues you catch to eat?

I fillet them as soon as I get home, cut out and toss the "red" parts
into the ground as fertilizer, and put the remaining fillets in a baggie
with lemon juice in the refrigerator over night. Then, the next day, I
either fry up or bake the fillets.

When the fishing was slow in St. Augustine, I'd head outside the inlet,
go north about a mile, drift fish about a half mile offshore, and catch
endless numbers of small sharks mixed with blues and the occasional
whiting. Whiting fillets were my favorites, next to flounder.

Ever gig for flounder? I haven't, but I have friends who do down south.
I'm afraid I'd "gig" my own foot.
