Based on what I have read here and on the manufacturers sites I would prefer
an E-Tec to power the next boat I purchase.

Having said that..........what is the future of 2 strokes? Will the E-Tec
survive future new and stricter emmisions standards for marine engines? Are
they as environmentally friendly as the 4 strokes manufactured by the other
marine outboard engine big boys?

Uh, you might want to search on some large-scale "boating" discussion
boards.

Good questions. With respect to technology, ETEC has it hands down
over four stroke in fuel efficiency and emissions. I was at the ETEC
demo when they compared an engine like mine, 200 HO, to a Honda Civic
- live demonstration. The ETEC burned cleaner by 50%. And I believe
at one time, although this may have changed in the past year or so,
that ETEC technology was the only outboard technology allowed on Lake
Tahoe. Compared to Yamaha and Mercury four strokes, the difference
was about 25%.

In terms of tech, it's an amazing engine. The SAFE mode is a really
nifty innovation and in truth, the engine is virtually iindestructible
in that mode.

There will be two problems for two strokes - E85 and post-purchase
tech. So far, I haven't had a problem with any of the ETECs I
owned/own other than one minor glitch in the cooling system and a
software problem related to the EMM - apparently, they programmed the
200 HO with 60 degree software (the HO is 90 degree) and it was
faulting to SAFE position after running for 20 minutes. Finally
figured it out - no problems since. And I haven't heard of any
problems with other units that I am aware of.

In the future, who knows. I haven't seen the engine yet, but the
military is very interested in ETEC technology that Bombardier is
working on - engine will burn any fuel available. And it's all due to
the type of hi-tech materials they use. I know folks who have seen
the engine and from what I understand, it's flat out amazing. And
that technology is easily transferred back to the civilian market. I'd
sure as hell look at it if it became available. Sure would be fun to
stop and fill up with JP4 or diesel or gas or soy bean oil. :)

The main advantage to four stroke is that they are like weeds -
everywhere. Their one true advantage is they don't burn oil and gas -
just gas. I'll give four strokers that one.

On the other hand, I don't burn a lot of oil - I'm just broke into my
second gallon of XD-100 to top off the oil tank with about 10 ounces
of oil. That's $26 dollars of two stroke oil over two years. What's
an oil change and filter cost every 50/60 hours?

I'm a believer. :)

So? It's merely pointing out that ETEC is superior technology to
other outboard technology.

Those of us in the direct injection two stroke world are clearly
superior types, but we like to keep a low profile.

Bragging once in a while is good. :)

Naw, but there seem to be any number of "isolated" problems with some of
the etecs, some of which involve powerhead replacements. Dunno why.
