Unfortunately, I have written a couple of trip reports as well as a couple of other posts, not just garbage, that have just dissappeared. Well it looks like all the posts that I did last week actually showed up...
(Not that it is that difficult) I now look like an idiot... Gotta love technology... Does anyone else experience a fishfinder showing 200+ feet in 4 foot of water for a few seconds then showing the actual depth? Is this normal or should I call humminbird? It's not that unusual to get false depths on sounder, particularly for a seconds. Some things that seem to help include keeping the transducer clean, making sure the wiring is of large enough diameter and properly connected at both ends, and being careful not to run more than one sounding device at a time from your vessel. I often see situations where somebody is running a sounder on a flybridge and then goes to the lower helm and turn on another sounder without turning the first sounder off. In cases where there are separate transducers rather than slave units I suspect they get confused about which echoes to recognize. I upgraded to a new sounder a few years ago. Even though I only have one sounder on my boat, (there is a backup unit that never gets used), the old unit produced a lot of false intermittent readings. The new one, by Raymarine, is much better. |

That certainly seems plausible but I haven't had any interference while running a Garmin transducer at the starboard stern and a Humminbird at the port stern separated by about 6 feet. Two identical units probably would be more troublesome. |

My humminbird wide 100 occasionally reads 500+ depths for short intervals,
usually when the boat is moving. It reads properly when back down to a slow speed. My first transducer lasted about 3 years, gradually losing the ability to read depth while in motion. I usually would have to stop completely before it would start reading again. Not good when you are trying to feel your way through rocky shallows. Eventually it was not reading even after coming to a stop and I replaced the transducer. The new transducer cost about 2/3 what I paid for the whole unit. Now after 2 years it is starting to lose the readings at speed again. If in another year it gets to the point of needing yet another transducer I will likely replace the whole unit with a better one. -- Denis Roy D.
