Went one night to Crystal, had a great night, caught some smaller fish, after dark sat on lake and played guitar till I got tired. Went to Mashapauug lake in Union Ct. What a great place for families, best place I've seen up here in this hell hole since moving back. Nice boat launch, however it is a narrow cove to run if you are trying to sail out from the dock to the lake. Being a state park there are facilities and lots of trails to walk. Plenty of beaches and points to walk or boat to for a very quiet private day in the sun. Islands too, one had a "we hate people" (no tresspassing) sign even though it was undeveloped, I did not notice signs on other islands. Steep sides and lots of structure make this a great fishing lake, as well as the no wake speed limit, all the time. No water mosquitoes or water skiers either, nice for fishing. Went to Coventry lake the other night. Nice launch, dock, friendly folks local. Had one asshole with a couple of skiers cut me off about 40 yards from shore as I was trolling along at about 5 mph. He could have gone behind me (500 or more yards open water), but he kept heading for my nose from a quarter mile out and cut me off, shrugging his shoulders as he went by as if to say "so what". I had to come about or I would have taken out his kids on the skis. I just don't get it with these viagra boaters, they think it's funny to mess with the smaller boats, makes them feel cool. Of course, never thinking it can lead to an incident like the murder of a sailboater by a drunk viagra boater on the CT river the other day. If I were her family, he would already be in the tread of a Harley. Anyway, I found some great structure and lots of rock bottom on the NE side of the lake, got some bass, have not checked out the rest of the lake yet cept for a quick run around the edge on the way in. I am feeling better about the area up here, still not thrilled about driving half to a full hour to fish, but there are places around here anyway. I miss the shoreline. Getting more satisfied with the boat I am stuck with too, it is a good tool for what I do. Me and my mutt, my meds and the Martin... What a great day it will be.. Got any nice creeks to wade in for las truchas, also know as trout?- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Most of the good native trout streams are out SW's way but there are a lot of stocked areas out there and closer. The many small brooks in the NE section of the state, basically pull over anywhere and walk into the woods. Bigelow brook, 8 mile, Salmon, Devils Hopyard and most of the tributaries of those rivers and streams are good, all east of the CT River. When I was a kid, closer to me was the Tankerhoosen system, Three lakes with a decent stream flow between, that is where I did most of my trout fishing as a kid, great streams, lots of stockies, mixed in with a great bunch of natives. At the top of that system is Valley Falls park, there were also some decent feeder and drain brooks there. The biggest slap is the Hockanum River which is about 200 yards from my house. When I was young it was so polluted from the mills, it ran red and you had to hold your nose to cross the bridge, literally so you did not puke. The State has spent decades cleaning it and not it is considered a "Trophy Trout" steam. I fished there once a couple of seasons ago, and it still is however not clean enough for me, if my dog won't drink it... A couple of hundred yards the other direction is Avery Brook which has gone the other way since they turned it from a brook, to "flood control". But all in all, yeah, if you are into Trout fishing like I am, there are plenty of gunk holes and wading brooks around here. Lately though I have gotten lazy, I sit mostly in boats and fish/play guitar.. When I want serious fishing I have a good friend that can put me on the fish, and if not, we can always finish the day at the club, even I catch fish there ![]() Which river goes all the way up to Great Barrington, MA? Asked a tackle shop guy up that way about it and he laughed. Something about it being the next worst body of water in the Northeast, next to Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. Not worth even talking about cleaning it up. |
