I'm interested in the Lombardini 57HP 2204M diesel for a wide beam
canal boat. This appears a small light high performance engine, reving out to 3600rpm at a good price for the power. This 2.2L engine revs 800rpm more than the similar size BETA 50HP - and has more usable torque up to 120 NM I would put a 3:1 reduction and a 20" Crowther prop, the idea being to have a large efficient prop turning slowly with the engine running in the most fuel efficient range. But plenty of instant stopping power at 1200 shaft rpm when you need it. Lombardini have just been taken over by Kohler of the USA. So how this might change things in the UK for distribution/service remains to be seen Would be very interested to have comments on Lombardini quality / after sales service. And any servicing problems encountered . Thanks in advance TJ |

I'd love to put in a 3 or 4 cylinder Gardner, a Russell Newbury, or
even a Beta JD 3 'tug' engine with 30HP @ 1400 RPM. It will take Kohler a while to turn around Lombardini and their reputation in the UK. First thing they can start with is motivate the sales staff to at least return calls!! I think I'd rather go for a Thornycroft T155 2.5l engine. max 67Hp @ 3600 or 55@3000 continuous rating. This is £6,500. A lot cheaper than £12,000 for a Beta JD3. In any event, primary traction is to be from a 20KW 48V Lynch DC motor off a 900AH 48V 1000Kg battery setup. So the diesel won't be doing many hours at all. I'll be dead before even the Thornycroft burns out. Never mind the JD3. Beside the planet may not be in the same shape we know it today either! TJ |
