Detect. If you wanna soften the seal just pour some light oil on the upper
end cap.

I highly doubt it'll be an issue. The exception is if the upper main
bearing is at all loose (wobbly) - that would put a bit of undue movement on
an older seal.

God call Clams.

Why, does God have an older outboard too?

No, but my wifes cat is a UNIX ?;*)

hey, this engine ROCKS!

I made a stand for it,a nd mounted it in the shop, went to look at the
carbs,a nd interesting, it was winterized very well, the carbs were
dry with a coating of light oil on the inside. Amazing after sittinng
all these years. My brother mixed up a brew of gas with some Amsoil
had we primed it up, Had the lower end sitting in a tub of water, with
no prop so's we wouldn't have to fight any splash. crossed the
solenoid and the starter would barely turn then we let the smoke out
of the starter and it quit totally. Took it off and it was all
corroded inside, which isn't abnormal. I could have worked on it, but
its an origional Prestolite. I HATE prestolites. so in the pooper it
went and I pulled the neweer United Technologies design off the shelf.
Pulled the bottom cap off and put some thin light oil int he bushings.
Funny thing that from the factory, the assembliers must be allergic to
lubricaiton. it seems likt the bushings are always way too try.

Installed starter and it sspun really well, but you could tell it hat
hearty compression. after a bit of coaxiing it fired right off. gave
it a moment and it settled down really well and had an excellent
throttle response. Transmission worked well, with effortless shifting.
and lower pump is putting out a good stream, even though I'm still
cautious of that.

So, after the smoke cleared we decided it was time to put the baby to
rest for a while. we ran the carbs fairly well dry, with a thick dose
of Sea-Foam and fogged it up fairly well. Now over in the corner of
the ware house it goes. I put a tag on it to "CHANGE IMPELLER AND
LOWER OIL BEFORE USE" But I'm not going to mess with it at this
venture.

All in all I've very well pleased with the engine. and If I can find a
really good deal on a heavy Pontoon or jon boat I'll have the engine
for it.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone, especially to you Clams.

Tim
