I am new to Jet Skis and was wondering if there is a way to start and
run the Kawasaki 900 STX out of the water. I recently aquired this machine and need to check it out. Thanks in advance. |

Most have a connection so that a garden hose can be hooked to it to supply
cooling water. My yamaha uses a short adapter that is about 12" long and has the fitting to hook to the ski on one end and a garden hose connector on the other. It plugs in under the seat on mine. I would expect yours uses something similar. Unlike outboards and i/os you can run most jetskis for a couple minutes without water. They do not have rubber impeller pumps that can melt. But the engine is water cooled so you can not run it more than a minute or so without water. "ban449" wrote in message ups.com... We were told if you are going to run it on the hose to start the engine before turning on the water. That applies to the Yamaha FX Cruiser HO. Since your model is different, your procedure may vary. I would call the local Yamaha shop to be sure. Capt Jack R.. "ban449" wrote in message ups.com... There should be some type of connection for attaching a water hose. On my Kaw 750s this was a small pipe on top of the motor with a black rubber cap. A hose (without an end) could be clamped on (there are various kits for quick connections). BE SURE TO START THE SKI BEFORE TURNING ON THE WATER AND TURN OFF THE WATER BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN THE SKI. If you do not, you will get water in the motor and could cause major damage. Please go to www.PWCtoday.com and look at the kawasaki forum for many answers and a large group of jetskiers to ask questions of. Dave Hall |

The bit about turning on the water after starting and before stopping is
because the cooling water exits via the exhaust system. If it is not running there is no exhaust pressure to lift the water from the muffler to the exhaust exit. So the exhaust system will fill up if there is water coming in and the engine is not running. After a minute or so the water will be high enough that it can flow back into the engine via the exhaust port. It's only a problem when using a hose because while running the cooling water comes from a pickup in the big jet. So when it is off no cooling water comes in. If you ever do find yourself in that situation remove the spark plug and crank until water stops coming out the spark plug hole. Then get it started and run until hot immediately. The main danger with water in the engine is not immediate. The damage comes from not getting all the water out right away. This is true if you sink it or otherwise get water in the engine while using it as well. "ban449" wrote in message ps.com...
