It is a great camera, but today, I would buy a Nikon D80, with Nikon
18-200mm lens

Have you held a D80? I found the body to be uncomfortably small, and it
felt unbalanced with 18-200 lens on it. My D70 feels much more
appropriately sized for my hands, and better balanced with the lens. Too
bad, because I was ready to buy the D80 and like everything about it but the
size and balance issue. It's a great value. The same issue would apply to
the D50 and even more so to the new D40. I guess it's the D200 for me.
