Works from Cape Lookout, North Carolina to Little River, North Carolina. Wrong group, Dave. The majority here either do not own a boat, own a boat but almost never use it, or use thier boat regularly but would rather talk politics, etc. Sadly enough, this will probably never be a boating newsgroup again. The majority prefer chaos or a chatroom atmosphere. Great group to find out what so-and-so ordered for dinner last night, or observe all the Little Limbaughs and Mini Moores parroting their assigned talking points. Looking for boating content here is like trying to watch an old black and white TV with bent rabbit ears. All the fuzz, flipping, and snow make it just about not even worth the effort. Then there are the occasional spammers. Can we assume you have no financial interest in any of the sites you refer to in your multiple posts? |

Chuck,
Thanks for the reply. I have been around since this was a real boating group. For that matter when this was the only boating group on the internet. It has been a LONG while....LOL! Financial interest? No, other than I pay the bills. It belongs to my members and they let me code really cool stuff for them. I just touched on the surface of the content at http://www.FryingPanTower.Com .106,000 pages last I looked. All of it FREE. No clubs, No memberships....nothing. If you run Offshore, WaveCast and ReefCast are the BOMB! NOAA Forecasts and NWS Forecasts are onsite to get the complete picture. Tide Charts to get you in and out the inlets safely. SST, Clor A, Modis True Color and the Coastal Relief Model to help you find the fish. A Photo Gallery to post your photos in and friendly advice if you came up empty from REAL people that FISH. A bunch of these folks fish for a living.....me included. So Stop by and say "Howdy" sometime. The posts in the Usenet are picked up and run on a ton of sites throughout the internet. It brings some folks that otherwise would not find us. The difference is I am not selling anything....just hooking folks up with one of the best Offshore Fishing related sites around. I will have several more posts as time allows. Dave "Chuck Gould" wrote in message oups.com... Capt. You're sure doing your part, Chuck, to discourage discussion. Speaking of financial interests, got another advertorial for us? Not any time soon. I'm weary of being Don Quixote. Rec.boats will always be circling the bowl- a lot of people prefer the daily exchange of crap barbs to any discussion of a topic they find as boring as boats or boating. Not going to push the rock uphill for at least a while. May stick around, may not, don't know, don't care, and nobody else cares either so it's of no consequence either way. But I won't be launching OT threads, and I'll try to avoid getting sucked into those launched by others. Just no more boating related threads from me, either. As you illustrate so clearly, the majority don't want the rec.boats chatroom and political soapbox society cluttered up with boating talk. Speaking of writing things: Next time I'm back east I'll look you up and do a good report on your lobster boat. Been a long time since you mentioned that here. You ever going to come clean on that issue? It would be good for the soul. :-) |

Most everyone, Harry included, has been being pretty good (except for a couple who'll never quit). The Kerry thing rattled a lot of cages, including yours and mine. By this time next week the election will be over, except for all the challenges because folks can't read or are dead when they vote. The majority *don't* prefer chaos or political posts. The majority do seem to prefer boating related posts or to engage in friendly chitchat about mutual interests. As long as the chitchat doesn't devolve into vicious flamefests, as do the political and religious posts (or any JSB/Doug post), I see little wrong with it. My boat, and probably most of those north of me, are up for the winter. Our only boating post would be along the lines of: "Today I went to see if my boat was still in storage. It was." You'd be surprised how well a kill filter will reduce the number of garbage posts. |

Well, Don Quixote never got tired of tilting at windmills. :) Hey, I feel your pain in a sense. Based on some experiments I've done over the past few weeks, it would appear that in one sense you are right - there are some here whose very constitution demands that confrontation and excess verbiage rule the day. On the other hand, there have been some decent discussions about boating issues - opinions explained and knowledge dispensed. It's not quite as bleak as you would have it. and there has been some interesting off-topic discussions not related to boating - one of which you participated in. It's your choice - continue to post your reviews and knowledge based articles and ignore the nonsense, or take the long hike off the short end of the pier. I'm not going to try and sway you one way or the other. For my part, I will continue to pick and choose what I do and don't participate in. Trying to deny my own contradictory nature (I know, no big surprise there) is pointless. Besides, it can be most amusing to poke the ferrets once in a while and watch the carnage. :) That was all pretty sensible. You got me confused. --Vic |
